Add in Sentenced, Soilwork, At the Gates and Dark Tranquility for the melodic death metal.

If like Dragonforce and 80's metal then need some old German stuff. Helloween, Rage and Running Wild.

Some new bands like 3 Inches of Blood and Trivium are pretty good.

Also I would recommend Paradise Lost, Anaethema and My Dying bride British doom stuff that in later albums have gone off into some excellent prog type stuff Anathema in particular.

I have a Pandora station playing a lot of the Swedish melodic metal, although it keeps sneaking in some more mainstream stuff, should play a lot of In Flames, Dark Tranquility etc. Pandora

Europe, especially scandinavia puts the american metal scene to shame. Obviously, metal is incredibly broad, listen to a variety to figure out what you like and use a site like www.bnrmetal.com to find similar bands. I happen to like space, gothic, atmospheric although its hard to go wrong with some of the classic doom or black or power metal bands.

some of my favorites, dimmu borgir, candlemass - doom
deathstars, kovenant - space metal
The 3rd and the mortal - atmospheric
the gathering
ram-zet
tristania - gothic

Ind

I am well into the goth metal stuff as well, that new Deathstars album is absolutley fantastic, probably the best goth album in many many years has even shaded Fields of the Nephilims release which is pretty good as well.

I think the gathering have gone downhill in recent years, get some mid nineties Moonspell, Tiamat and Crematory think you might like. Probably will like Amorphis as well and maybe Sameal's early work.

I only stumbled on Deathstars last week, and i havent listened to anything else since.

I like what ive heard of tiamat and moonspell, but of course the metal scene is so bad in the states (well different), its sometimes hard to find even legal sources, and its impossible to find anything locally.

I've never even heard of Fields of the Nephilims, nor any of the recent gathering stuff. Ill keep the other bands in mind as well. Thanks

agree with most of the choices here. there are several different styles and "heaviness" of metal. can't go wrong with black sabbath (with ozzy) with "sabotage" likely being their heaviest album. additional recommendations would be sepultura's "arise" and van halen's "fair warning" and "1984".

Iron Maiden- make sure you have the first 5 albums- Iron Maiden, Killers, The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, and Powerslave.
After that- Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son are real good too.

Yes! After that Rage for Order and Empire.

Scorpions Blackout is very solid. Also, if you like Sabbath get Ozzy's 1st two solo albums (Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman).
