Re: What kind of career do you have?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Sooga - how did you make the switch? I also hate software development. [/ QUOTE ] haha, out of necessity, for starters. I just quit my coding job, without anything lined up or anything. Yea, it wasn't the brightest move in the book, but everythign worked out ok. I just sent my resume to high schools around my area, and during the summer (when schools typically are hiring for the upcoming school year), one of the schools contacted me, I interviewed, and was offered the job literally 2 hours after I interviewed. These days though, with some recent Bush legislation, it's pretty much impossible (unless you're in the ghettoest of ghettoes) to start teaching without already having a credential. [/ QUOTE ] How bad was the pay cut? [/ QUOTE ] I was making $55k coding, went to $34k teaching. [/ QUOTE ] OK, just curious - wasn't expecting explicit detail. [/ QUOTE ] I'm a math teacher. when you ask for numbers, you get detail. |

Do you enjoy doing what you do for a living? As for me, I'm currently a software developer and considering quitting and going back to college for a change in career. [/ QUOTE ] I had a friend who was a coder, he left his high paying job to become a mechanic I found that amusing I'm an IT Manager/ "Tech Guy" and I wouldn't want to do anything else |

Re: What kind of career do you have?
Yeah 4 year CS degree. Coding is very difficult for me, I'm not very logical. Weird how I got a degree in something like CS.

Re: What kind of career do you have?
Customer Service / Administration. I hate my job. I want to go back to school, but would have to do it at night and probably all online because my job blows and wont give me time to get anywhere. I kind of have a few things in mind: psychology / criminal justice. But I dont want to go back unless I know for sure. I think I should just jump in and take a class, any class to get back into the swing of things.

Re: What kind of career do you have?
I don't love my job, but I love the company I work for. I'll move within the company before I go somewhere else.

Re: What kind of career do you have?
I was working towards a career in software development but realized early enough that it would probably suck. Now I fly helicopters, which does not suck.

Re: What kind of career do you have?
Medical publishing. I hate it.
I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I'm slightly concerned because I feel I should have some idea by now. |

Re: What kind of career do you have?
[ QUOTE ]
Do you enjoy doing what you do for a living? As for me, I'm currently a software developer and considering quitting and going back to college for a change in career. [/ QUOTE ] I'm an independent IT consultant. Absolutely love it. Great hourly pay and I am (was) able to take a LOT of time off between contracts. Much better than the decade I spent as a salaried IT developer for a large corporation (50-70 hour weeks). Sadly, due to offshoring and preferred-vendor contracts (which employ a lot of people for very low rates) good paying jobs are hard to find. So, it looks like i'll be going back to one of those 'regular' full-time jobs as it provides extra benefits (medical, profit-sharing, paid vacations/holidays/sickdays...). Can you to stick with your job and take night classes? This would be great if your company pays or partially reimburses your tuition. This may also give you the opportunity to do a parallel transfer w/in your company (HR, Accounting, training, legal, maintenence, fitness center, cafeteria...) depending on what you choose as your new career. |
