Default Media ethics....Leaked documents

Documents get leaked all the time to media outlets. Sometimes before it was supposed to be officially released, and other times for things that were never supposed to be released. Im just curious what others think on this.

Does the media have an obligation to give its audience this information?

or

Should the media ethically wait when something is leaked, and not acquired in good faith? If not, should they be held accountable through fines or court action.
