Re: Most Dangerous Backyard Toy
My Dad played lawn darts when he was a kid. He threw one when my Aunt (his sister)was running into the line of fire. It went right into her shoulder/collarbone area. She ran around screaming with this thing flopping around out of her chest. The emergency room doctor said that it missed her heart by less than an inch.
Weren't these things also caled Jarts, or am I imagining things? |

Re: Most Dangerous Backyard Toy
I voted slipnslide. I knew someone who broke his neck by diving head first onto one of those things in college. He is in a wheel chair now for life, including limited use of his hands.

Diving boards and pool slides are very dangerous. [/ QUOTE ] Bah. Diving boards make pools safe. The only rule I have in my pool is no jumping off the sides. Only jumping in from the board. It makes everything more organized and very safe and the kids don't mind. No one jumps in from the side and lands on top of someone else or hits the bottom. Everyone is aware of the diving board and no one jumps off it and lands on anyone else. I've had my pool for 12 years and hundreds of neighborhod and family kids and parties later, NO ONE has ever gotten even mildly hurt. And my stupid homeowners insurance company, after 9 years, took away my unbrella liability policy because we refused to remove the diving board. Idiots. |

Re: Most Dangerous Backyard Toy
Trampolines.
A buddy of mine broke his neck landing on his head. At first, after an x-ray, the doctor thought it was a sprain. When he was doing physio, the pain got worse and he heard cracking noises. Another X-ray later, it's a broken vertabra. Surgery...2 metal plates inserted from the front of his neck. 3 vertebrae are bolted together in his neck. Awesome. |

Weren't these things also caled Jarts, or am I imagining things? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, the brand name was Jarts. I have a set and use it often. I feel..... that lawn darts really aren't that dangerous because, well, you have to do something really [censored] stupid to get hurt by them, like throw them at someone or run in front of the game. I mean, wtf? People don't go running through a BBQ fire pit, don't go through the lawn darts game. With trampolines and slip and slides, there's a high possibility of getting hurt from them by just normal use, so they're inherently dangerous — unlike lawn darts. But not only that, the stuff that's "more fun" like doing a flip or putting a slip 'n' slide down a hill makes these things even more dangerous. People will decide to make slip 'n' slides and trampolines more dangerous through normal use, because you can, in theory, do flips and stuff safely, so people try them and get hurt. Lawn darts don't get any "more" dangerous unless you try to throw them at each other, which is not at all like trying to do flip. Can anyone disagree with that? -ChipsAhoya |
