How do you get hired as a bartender
How do you get hired as a bartender? I'm assuming you have to get some kind of a certification... what I'm really looking for is a current bartender to give me a step by step guide to getting hired once I turn 21. If anyone could chime in with their worldy experiences, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks OOT! |

Re: How do you get hired as a bartender
as far as i know, there are no certification requirements to be a bartender, atleast not in PA. i suppose a diploma from a bartending school would look good to an employer.
an alternate route would be to work the for the employer before the age of 21 as a server, cook, dishwasher, etc, then apply for bartenter. there are many bartender books out there to tell you how to make fancy drinks with umbrellas in them. if a patron asks you for some weird unknown drink that you dont know how to make, kindly ask him whats in it and mutter to youself, "when men were men." |

Re: How do you get hired as a bartender
There's likely a course in your area that will spruce up your resume. At the next party you go to practicing being bartender for your friends.

Re: How do you get hired as a bartender
You will have a really tough time getting a decent job unless you are a big Abercrombie type guy. Most of the popular and high-end places hire based almost entirely on looks.
There is no such thing as a "bartending license." These courses will teath you how to make drinks and be a good bartender but the certification is useless in helping you to find a job. Again, you will have a lot of trouble finding a job unless you have big [censored] or are a big meathead guy. I worked as a bartender for about a year in a private club (a club for rich people, not the fun kind). If you really want to work as a bartender, concentrate on golf clubs, non-trendy restaurants, college bars, etc. Working as a barback can help you get a job but can often hurt your prospects. Barbacks are promoted only rarely because, while there is an unending supply of qualified bartenders, a good barback is much harder to find, especially if you know the place and its system. PM me if you want more info RE bartending school and the job market. |
