More Math to support reasoning (NC)

I am wondering if we can get more math involved in our answers to posts. Math is the backbone of good poker and yet all I see is this:

Hero posts hand on raising a str8 draw:

Response 1: That's spew, don't do it anymore.
Response 2: Good one! You gotta raise in this situation. It's +EV.
Response 3: Just call so that these other limpers can pad the pot.

Hero = confused

I think it would boost the learning process and help end confusion if we start using the math more often for the different possibilities. And also help to correct us learning folks' misconceptions on how to correctly perform calcuations on various hands.

Lot of good players who don't know the odds for EVERYTHING and that sort of thing. Poker is a game of people, not numbers, read this interesting post by former ML'er Isura (switched over to the dark side [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]).

I'm not saying math is useless, but if all you know is equity for your basic draws on the flop roughly, and the odds of flopping a set, you should be working on different things

the search function is your friend as far as simple poker math goes.

those are things you can pretty much learn on your own (by reading). pot odds, pot equity, raising for value, etc. etc.

despos, you have a severe but common misunderstanding of pot equity vs. pot odds, and there are probably two or three hundred threads in these very forums which have distinguished the two. you really just need to do a search.

The math is important but only for what your actions should be. The math won't help you try and figure out what villain is doing. Hands played at a given level are as important as the math.

I suppose alot of responses are based on experience/intuition but are very often correct based on the maths. On the very close decisions someone usually does a calculation. If someone says 'raise AA preflop' then you don't need a calculation to show it, but to the experienced players, raise AA preflop is just as obvious as open raise Q9s on the button. The maths is nice to back up a point but I'm sure alot of posters have seen these hands before and if they had to do a mathematical analysis every time, they wouldn't bother posting. I'm happy to ignorantly take their word for it (for now) [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
