Default Questions about rakeback in general (I know nothing)

How exactly does rakeback work?

Do you get back a certain percentage of the rake you personally had taken from the pots you won, or from every pot you contributed to that was raked?

I've had a friend tell me about a program for a site where I would supposedly make 25-30% back of all raked pots I even PARTICIPATED IN. This sounds too good to be true.

Is it?

You do get a percentage of your rake back.

Poker sites calculate rake with the dealt or contributed method.

Dealt means you are averaged in with all the players who were dealt in the hand whether you folded pre-flop or not.

Contributed means you need to contribute to the pot to get credit. There is contributed weighted which means you get back a % of exactly what you put in the pot or the contributed averaged which means you get back an average of all the other players who contribute to the pot.

Check out the FAQ to see which sites are Dealt or Contributed.

Okay, well question...

This month, I have contributed to raked pots that ended up taking a total of about $5,000 in rake (obviously including pots I both won and lost). Does this mean with the rakeback I'd be entitled to well over a grand?

If so, how is this possible? It seems that sites would go broke doing this if enough people signed up for rakeback, because it wouldn't be too long before they have to give more money back to players than they even took in total rake to begin with.

Hi Whitewash,
Your rakeback is not a % of the TOTAL rake paid, but a % of YOUR rake paid.
So if you are playing at a ten-man table that has contributed $5000 to rake (where all players dealt cards contribute to the rake), your contributed rake would be $500. If your rakeback was 30% you would get $500*30%=$150.
