I guess I'm looking at a set or trash. I don't see any reason for this guy to want to protect so I should call?

Any reads on the villian in question? Whats your table image? I usually call this, but I will fold against some players. I see people do this with draws and sets, but rarely anything else, and there are no draws on this board. If you've been playing very agressively he could easilly have a hand like AT or JJ, and be putting you on a bluff.

no good draws to semibluff here... i lean towards fold without reads.

People are donkies. He probably just wants to get his money in now with AT, JJ, 77-99 etc.
