Worst fold ever?

2/5 NL at Turningstone. I have about $650.

I have AA. 1 limper, I'm the button. I limp. Small blind folds, big blind checks.

Flop comes 976 rainbow. Limper raises to $20, I reraise making it 60. Everyone else folds, limper calls.

Turn comes an A. Villain checks it to me. I contemplate making a raise and play with my chips for a while, but am concerned about the straight possibility, because I didn't raise pre-flop. I check. The villain however thinks I raised, and says "I reraise all-in." The dealer stops him obviously, since I actually just checked.

River comes an offsuit 4. Villain, who has about $240 behind, moves all in. I think about it for a few minutes, and fold top set for no good, bad, or even mediocre reason.

I think he has two pair or a set here way more than he has a straight. He absolutely doesn't put you on trip aces, so he could be doing that with all kinds of hands.

I couldn't fold that.

Is it at all possible that he knew you checked and was trying to pull something, or am I just crazy? Would he really say "re-raise" in this situation if you had actually bet?

If you're going to limp preflop, fold on the flop.
