Limit hold'em section is beyond bad.

No limit tournament section is decent.

Rest of the book is ok for beginners material.

Keeping in mind that this is a beginner's book, it's an OK place to start but you better move on fairly quickly to some of the 2+2 material on the market like the Miller/Sklansky/Malmuth collaboration "Small Stakes Hold'em" and Sklansky & Malmuth's "Hold'em For Advanced Players. Also take a look at Lee Jones' "Winning Low Limit Hold'em". Soon to be released (May 30th) is a new Miller/Sklansky book called "No Limit Hold'em: Theory and Practice" which is highly anticipated by many members of these forums.

Hellmuth's book can kind of get your engine cranked but it won't get you out of first gear. I say this honestly as it was indeed the first poker book I bought about 3 years ago. It gave me the most basic understanding of starting hands but doesn't really have much in the way of technical information and pays little or no attention to position. (Ignoring position is one of the most common beginner mistakes in poker.) I'm happy to have read it but now it just sits on my bookshelf while I regularly read and re-read the other titles I mentioned above.

I just borrowed this book today from the library. It is a pretty bad book in my opinion. I don't think the limit sections are useful at all. The book doesn't cover enough about No limit hold'em. The majority of the book is about other games such as omaha and stud. Games that I am not interested in. Don't buy this book. Even if you're a beginner. There are plenty of better books out there.

This book is very effective if you give it to your opponent as you say "it's the best poker book ever!"

I'm rarely as mean as I'm going to be here:

The worth of the book is even less than the worth of the author. The ONLY thing good about it is the laugh you get out of the title. Is there NOTHING worthwhile in Helmuth or his self-promotion?

I'm so happy to say I never spent a dime on this book. It was the first modern poker book I read and like a tidbit Mike Caro uses it told me "...there is such a thing as stratagy"

Go to the library and borrow Play Poker like the Pros if you like.

BUY Theory of Poker, Small Stakes Hold-em ect.
