Problem : Bouncer and the Code

So there is a guy who is looking to get into this private club. The club has a bouncer at the door and the only people allowed in have to answer the question correctly.

The guy hides in a bush to wait and hopefully overhear the code. Someone walks up to the bouncer and the bouncer tells him 12. The person responds with 6 and is let into the bar. Another one walks up to the bouncer. The bouncer says 6. The person responds with 3. The bouncer also lets this one in.

By now the guy thinks he has the code cracked. He walks up to the bouncer and the bouncer says 10. The guy confidently responds with 5. The bouncer rejects him and the guy is forced to leave. What should the guy have responded with?
