Re: Poker=Gambling
[ QUOTE ]
of course, pros say its not gambling. they want constant inflow of fish. [/ QUOTE ] Shouldn't they then say that it is gambling, i.e. contains a large luck element that allows anyone to win? |

Re: Poker=Gambling
When someone plays BJ in a casino, are they gambling?
I think they are. When 2 parties are betting on the outcome of an unknown event, are they BOTH gambling? Can one party BE gambling and the other NOT? I don't think so. So.. The person in the casino playing BJ IS gambling Consequently the casino is ALSO gambling on that event. The casio sometimes win's / sometimes loses. They have (as we know) a small edge. So over time they make a profit. Where is the confusion as to whether or not BJ / poker / etc / etc is gambling? Regards, Ian |

Re: Poker=Gambling
[ QUOTE ]
Would someone please quote some text or post a link explaining why playing winning poker is gambling. TY [/ QUOTE ] One might wonder how literal you desire to get? So this is my answer to your post. Webster's Dictionary! gam·ble ( P ) Pronunciation Key (gmbl) v. gam·bled, gam·bling, gam·bles v. intr. 1. a. To bet on an uncertain outcome, as of a contest. b. To play a game of chance for stakes. 2. To take a risk in the hope of gaining an advantage or a benefit. 3. To engage in reckless or hazardous behavior: You are gambling with your health by continuing to smoke. v. tr. 1. To put up as a stake in gambling; wager. 2. To expose to hazard; risk: gambled their lives in a dangerous rescue mission. n. 1. A bet, wager, or other gambling venture. 2. An act or undertaking of uncertain outcome; a risk: I took a gamble that stock prices would rise. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Perhaps from obsolete gamel, to play games, from Middle English gamen, gamenen, to play, from Old English gamenian, from gamen, fun.] This points again to what Sheridan has stated. Everyone gambles without even giving it considertion. It is the risk of loss which makes us as individuals question why we do or do not gamble. If you feel your risk are out weighed (minimized) to non existance I can understand the question. On the other hand if you feel you cannot win because of the risk I can equally well understand the question. Im willing to place a bet on the fact you will gamble anytime you play poker. Want to bet that you wont? Monty |
