her: It's a cosmo and it's delicious.
me: Oh, it looks good. Mind if I have a taste?
her: No, not at all.
I take a sip, hand it back, and she immediately drinks some.
me: Oh, now you have it too.

She looked disgusted and walked away. Bow to the master.

This is a gem my best friend and I invented for college. It has a very very high success rate of getting your foot in the door.

Wait until your target hot girl walks up to the bar to order another round. Set your drink down and walk up next to her. Have a scrunched up twenty dollar bill your hand. Hold your hand low, and release the twenty. Wait for 10 seconds. Back up a little and start looking at the floor intently, slowly bending down to pick up the twenty. The girl is going to look at whats going on, since some dude next to her is dropping to the floor. Come back up with the twenty and ask her "did you drop this?" Two routes from here :

1) She says "No" (95%). Act excited, since you just found a twenty! Tell her this next round is on you with your "found" money. She will smile, thank you, and start talking to you.

2) She says "Yes" (5%). Say "you're a terrible liar.. <wink>, but I'll give props to the effort, let me get this round". She will smile since you busted her, but the result is the same.

Have fun. Later in the night, when you are back at your/her place and drunk, you can casually mention "gald I dropped that twenty"... she will laugh, you get laid.

Why do people always post about how to approach girls in bars? Just walk into a bar, look good, order some drinks, and go from there. Girls will either walk up to you, or you'll walk up to girls. Conversation starts the same way conversation starts anywhere else in the world -- a question, a compliment, an offer, etc.

How are you familiar with 'basic strategy' yet have no idea what approaches to use?!

Just go with a female opinion opener or a 'quick your thoughts on [insert prop here]' opener. Are you American? Hell, you could open just by saying 'my friend and I want to know your thoughts on America' and then just move into any sort of routines you want.

I dunno, I just started thinking about the theory and strategy behind all of this stuff so whatever.
