good post james. these are always fun, inspiring posts to read. i have known james for many years now (since middle school?), and all the great things people say about him are true. without a doubt, i would be nowhere near the player i am today if it was not for james. congrats, and good luck in the future!

The difference, I think, between the great and merely very good players is the degree to which they can keep up their A game. I will still find myself playing poorly way more often than any ‘pro’ should, in my opinion. I’ve spoken to J_V at great length about controlling tilt(in all forms) and believe I’ve made great strides to stop doing so. Ultimately, I don’t think achieving a high level of play is particularly difficult for those who are motivated to do so and have the natural intelligence to do so, but controlling the emotions that arise from playing this game is a different beast altogether. Focusing on improving this aspect of one’s game, I think, can be even more important than the fundamentals.

This is probably the single most important part of your post James and something I've been thinking a ton about recently as well.

Beat me to it. Everyone should read this, then read it again.

Great post James. Give a shout when you're back on the East Coast.

Lately, I've been on the fence about returning to poker. Your last paragraph pushed me back over. Thank you.

Do you feel more comfortable grinding any particular form of poker? B/w LHE, NL, and SNGs?

James,

"We all fed off eachother a lot"

I think you meant to write "We all leeched off the awesome advice and intellect provided by the great Ulysses."

I prefer playing NL these days if the games are soft, mostly becuase the comparable sized limit games don't often get quite as soft quite as often. I have played a smattering of 530 and 215 SnGs, but find those pretty boring. Also, soft NL games will have significantly lower variance than similar limit games, and I've had some pretty ridiculous daily swings in limit, 20k in each direction being a lot more common than I wish it was.

Great post james, I wish you the best of luck. By the way, what kind of camp do you do during the summer? I volunteer at a few week long ones during the summer and find them to be very fun and rewarding.
