tournament vs limit play

I play with the same few players. We get together every couple of months for tournament style games. Very friendly, fun, potentially profitable, but my tournament game has suffered much since I learned to play fixed limit Hold'em. I play online quite a bit and venture to the casino every once in a while.

I love poker as most of my friends do. I have decided that I want to host a permament game at my home. However, I want to get away from the NL tourneys. I feel that some people won't/can't gamble every 3 weeks due to only a select few making the money in the tourneys. (It seems to be the same people over and over). These would be 25 dollar buyins with 20 going to the pot and 5 dollars going to a bounty. Sometimes we would allow unlimited buyins with the blinds escalating every 15 or 20 minutes.

Moving to a FL game allows the others to show a profit. It also gives ME an advantage since I feel I am the most experienced limit player among the group.

Do any of you play solely FL at home and how does it work for you? Did you used to play NL tourneys and make the switch?

I won't be the only one to host poker parties. There will be others hosting and they will obviously choose their own structure.

What limit do you think would be a good limit to play. I think some might think that if I ask them to bring 50 dollars to a game that they would think they would have to risk losing it all? I think it would be more appropriate to tell them it's just a structured game and that they can bring what they wish. I figure 1/2 might be too much, but maybe 50c/$1 would be a good place to start.

No one at home games wants limit. They see NL on tv and that is what they want. They aren't all good players which is why they don't get itm that much. If they aren't showing a profit consistantly before they wont even in FL. Good luck with trying though.

Not necessarily true- as Phil Hellmuth has proved, being a good tourney player doesn't mean you're a good cash game player.

$0.50/$1 allows them to buy in for $20 and have a decent stack to start, for limit poker. Good plan on how to present it and where to start.

I've been hosting a NLHE freeze out once a month for about a year and a half and inquire at every game about trying a limit tourney or just playing a night of LHE ring game. Even though many of the players never even get a sniff of being in the money they all want to play NLHE.

I don't think this is indicative of the masses but my group has reached the point where it has become a kind of "badge of honor" to defeat the players that usually cash in the NLHE tourney. I think that's really the reason that there hasn't been much interest in playing anything other than No Limit.

I would think that it would be almost impossible to convince people to play limit hold 'em. My brother and I (who both prefer limit) have often tried to convinced the people that we play with to play limit poker (in tournaments, not ring games) with no success. I've noticed that since no limit is on television and allows more options with how to play your hands, that's what people like to play.

We usually play $10 buy in tourneys, and sometimes a $24 buy in NL .25/.25 cash game.

The last cash game we played, one player got really lucky and cashed out about $150, I lost $7, and all of the other players rebought at least once. I did not like this, and I tried suggesting a limit game but everyone said it was gay (not that there's anything wrong with that...in this day and age it's perfectly acceptable).

I think I'll force it on them on of thes days...

Some players seem to have the opinion that limit is not "real" poker, and you really can't convince them otherwise. The most common complaints:

"It takes all the skill away from the game!"

"You can't get anyone to fold!"

I host limit games on occasion. I merely present it as a type of poker that uses different skills and strategies. I've learned from experience that such nights usually benefit people who are there to learn, play, and win the game over those who are there to gamble or prove their manhood. As an added bonus, a few of the players we find the most annoying often refuse to participate that night on "principle". [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

As a general rule, the players most likely to jump up, yell, and pump their fists after dragging a $25 pot will be those least likely to enjoy any poker game other than NLHE, as seen on television.

If you want to play a limit game, you usually have to give the other players no other choice. It's a lot easier if you host. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

$24? That seems quite random. Care to elaborate on how you came to use that structure?
