Good job. Don't listen to the naysayers. They are all fatsos who rationalize away their health by claiming it's too risky to workout. They probably take a gun, a donkey with 5 gallons of water, and a GPS with them on a 3 mile hike.

I think for a non-competitive swimmer you made great time. In a pool, competitve swimmers do a 500 yard swim under 5 minutes. You had cold, current, and mediocre skills. You did a great job!

(I think the lifeguard would have seriously warned you if there had been crazy currents or shark sightings. It wasn't all that risky.)

[/ QUOTE ] Phil Hendrie is great. Like I said, he said it was but I'll double check as I really don't think I was making super great time, but I did pretty much just keep moving the whole time at the fastest pace I figured I could muster.

elaine: yeah, lifeguards jobs are to save lives, so one wouldn't let me die, (right...right??)

To those saying I should have gotten more $, these kids are fairly affluent but everyone acts like $5 is some [censored] load of money.

Not to take away from your triumph, but from your description you swam across the tidal Basin, not the Potomac. Why?

The Lincoln Memorial doesn’t sit on the Potomac, it’s inshore about 100 yds in the Memorial bridge circle.

Across the Potomac from the Memorial is Virginia; there are no buildings there and no walls.

The Potomac has a very swift current. Start at Memorial Bridge and you’ll end up almost at Haynes Point.

This was a great read, and a great victory. While it is easy to armchair and say it's an easy challenge, it is actually difficult to do. Not impossible, but definetly worthy of props.

1000 yards is not that hard to cover in calm waters. I would swim a mile each year for a stupid patch in the Boy Scouts, and as a competititve swimmer, could easily cover 500 leisurely yards in 8 minutes.

FWIW, risk assessment summary for next time:

Shark attack<<<<Muscular cramp<<Being caught in a rip current (greatest threat of doom) <<<<<Not pizowning that punk byotch through challenges of manliness

I am about 99.53% sure if I had attempted that, I would have died. Fear of water/drowning + mediocre swimming skills + 1000 yards = Death.

Congrats man, I sure as Hell couldn't do it.

Now if you were a real champ, you would've parlayed this show of masculininty into some tail.

Still, congrats on manning up and proving your friends wrong.
