Re: how to get started writing poetry
I agree with everyone who said read and then read more.
Also, you might consider finding a poetry open mike in your area and reading aloud. Or at least listening to other people's poems. The feedback can be helpful. The fact that you post to 2+2 means you'll probably be good enough to do this without embarrassing yourself. It's pretty hard to embarrass yourself anyway, since the audience is generally very nice to first time readers. |

Re: how to get started writing poetry
Since this is OOT I think that a haiku would be a good way for you to go. Even if almost every "haiku" posted in OOT is a senryu. Der.

Re: how to get started writing poetry
Tony,
When writing, it's always hardest to get started, so I thought I'd help you out: THERE WAS AN OLD MAN FROM NANTUCKET... Enjoy! Best Regards, The Sucker, Poet Laureate |

Re: how to get started writing poetry
[ QUOTE ] There once was a man named Tony Who felt his poems were quite phony visiting' O-O-T' He cried out "please' help me!" just to hear all the cacoph-o'ny...of having sex with a pony [/ QUOTE ] with great respect to the original! very creative...FYP with a point! remember the poster who says with poetry, you have to come back and change it and refine it and change it again! also, check here moderator's playground you may find some peole with suggestions for the OP! try www.reference.com and www.rhymezone.com the thesaurus is your friend! try writing phrases until you have many more than you could possibly use and then distilling the phrases and applying the thesaurus for rhymes and see what you come up with. if this is a love story, try writing a sonnet. the form seems to flow well for the stages of love and loss and revival of hope. |
