20/40 Blind Play, possible huge leak?
Live full table 20/40 at the Fox, TAG open raises from UTG+2, 2 very loose chip spewers cold call, SB mucks, and its back to me in the BB with J [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]7 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. I call. My friend and I had a very long discussion about this afterwards and he insisted that this is a huge leak for me to call from the BB with this hand. I argued that it depends on the situation (opponents who I know will pay off if I make a big hand, my table image, my ability to lose less or win more based on my level of skill vs my opponents level of skill when I feel I need to get to a showdown or find out cheaply where I'm at or be able to maximize value if I flop a huge hand/draw, etc.) Basically he thinks its definitive that calling here with that hand is -ev when factoring in reverse implied odds, and my argument is that it depends on the situation and that it's a little more broad of an answer than just yes all the time or no all the time. Any input? If this belongs in Poker Theory, I apologize. Thanks

Re: 20/40 Blind Play, possible huge leak?
What is he talking about? Suited connectors--even weak ones--tend not to suffer from reverse-implied odds, because when they hit they tend to form very strong hands that can bet confidently on the end. When they miss they are very easy hands to get away from. Even hitting top pair will not get you into too much trouble if you are careful.
This is an easy call--you are getting 7.5:1 immediate odds and you probably have way more than 11% equity. When you factor in that you are closing the action, and also that you have two very loose players that will pay you off and bloat your implied odds, J7s is way more than minimum. If anything, it's a huge leak not to call. |
