I just learned how to do avatars a day or two ago.

I'm more familiar with Imageshack than Photobucket.
In 2+2 do not specify the forum or site code (ones with the tags). Use the code for a "direct link" for your avatar.

the code looks something like http://imageshack.com/..../pic.gif <-not a valid link)
