Anybody familiar with the travel industry? Yesterday, my buddy and I bought flights to London from Vancouver for $1250 inc tax at a local travel centre. At midnight, I discovered the online prices of the same flight to be $960 inc tax. Same prices today. Did our travel agent jerk us for $500+? or did the airline just drop the price by a significant amount at midnight?

Not sure if your travel agent is jerking you around, but I've seen prices for a certain flight change significantly within minutes of doing a search on Travelocity.com. So I would say there is a chance the price could have dropped at mignight.
FWIW, on Travelocity I've found that tickets are usually the cheapest about 6-10 weeks before the scheduled flight. |

S,
Go back to the travel agent, sometimes they can refund you the difference. |

I know most airlines raise their prices as the flights approach but do any lower them by a lot if the flight is not sold out at the last minute? Any sites I can check for this kind of thing? |
