Used to have a beer after work almost every night, except "a beer" usually meant three. Eventually I decided I didn't like where that was going and got tired of paying for a 24 every week.
Now I pretty much only buy alchohol at or for social occasions at which time I often drink to slight excess (haven't been really hammered in a long time) - I don't generally keep any in the house, and I usually have a Coke when we go out for dinner. |

I drink more days than I don't.
I drank less frequently in college, but when I drank, I meant it. Now it is much more likely to be 2 or 3 beers (or some wussy fruity malt beverage). I don't drink because I'm lonely. I drink to stop the voices in my head. |

then: passed-out drunk several times a week
now: half bottle of wine at the end of the day several times a week I think there are three main reasons for the change: 1. Doesn't feel as good as it once did 2. Fewer people to do it with 3. Lower status associated with it (drunk college students are "wild and crazy/fun", drunk old people are "pathetic losers/alcoholics"). |

[ QUOTE ]
32 Every day A few times/week Rarely (it's almost always an accident) You'll find as you get older that you settle into habits. Among those habits is the after work/unwind drink or three. I know a bunch of very successful people for whom this is a daily occurence. Interestingly, the majority seem to be hard liquor drinkers, as opposed to beer. Every morning I wake up at 5AM to work out, but every bit as normal is an after-work drink. One thing I didn't realize when I was young was what a bunch of lushes old people are. [/ QUOTE ] That's pretty funny, but true. Old people tend to drink hard liquor -- it's just smarter. The ones with some solid years on them either grew up when three martini lunches were standard, or were already grown up then. Either way, drinking a lot is pretty common for many of them, at least the ones I've known and their parents. I've had long periods where a beer or two after work was standard. And long periods where I haven't had a drink in many months, even a year. Now I'll drink maybe once every two weeks, and that'll be for maybe three drinks. Or not. Just pretty random. I dont' feel as good the next day if I do any real boozing so I don't do it too much. The time I really drink is when I'm doing serious house cleaning. I practically need a gun to my head to do that. Loud music and booze helps that a little. want to get a nice buzz going when I do. |
