How is this a good rule? If the problem is stupid jokes, FYP's are not the problem, they're just a symptom of a larger disease - unfunny OOTiots.

I don't use the FYP very often, but to be honest, I find almost all of them funny. I have a very immature sense of humor.

the problem is one person arbitrarily deciding if a FYP is funny or not, and then taking action against it. basically, [censored] doesn't like these, so now they are not allowed? [/ QUOTE ] The problem is people giving too much of a flying [censored]. We'll probably get much more entertainment value out of the rule then we will out of allowing FYPs. And OOT is far more about entertainment value than upholding the Constitution. |

I don't particularly like FYP's, but ocassionally they're funny. This new rule is the dumbest rule I've ever heard of. Might as well ban people for making an unfunny joke.

I have been posting in OOT more and more often these days. I personally have not noticed a problem with the current level of useless FYP's. One of the prime purposes of a discussion forum is discussion (surprised?). When a post doesn't add much to a discussion, it is obviously subject to judgement. Low-signal, high-noise posts (often known as "sucky" posts) detract from the overall quality of a discussion. This bothers some people, which is fine. Personally, I just skim over posts that don't appear to add anything.
If the overuse of FYP's is viewed as a problem, especially by a poster/moderater, like [censored], who is around often, then I think that a one-week rule to eliminate the practice is better than both no rule and a permanent rule. The point is to force people to think before they post. If this eventually leads to a greater number of quality posts, then I think the rule is good. If it doesn't, then I still think the rule is good, because at least the effort was made. |
