All taxes affect businesses in the extreme. Are you proposing no direct taxation on businesses? Do you believe in subsidies or environmental restrictions or "fair trade" restrictions or isolationism? Do you believe in restricting sales of certain types of items, such as pornography, drugs, guns, or bombs? Do you believe in restricting certain trades to government monopolies, such as military, police, roads, or power?

I wouldn't call you a fiscal conservative because of your support for social spending. Fiscal conservatives are generally against government involvement in the economy. But you are close enough that you could probably call yourself that and be fine. It's hard to say whether you're a social liberal or not based on what you've said so far. I guess it depends on your definition. Your positions on social spending and civil rights are both relatively consistent with the liberal position. I suppose you could call yourself a liberal capitalist if you wanted. That's probably accurate, but I don't know that it corresponds with any American political party.

These days terms like "liberal" and "conservative" are losing their original meanings. "Fiscal conservative and social liberal" might be as close as you can come to describing yourself. But it is awfully broad terminology. It is hard to do better than that if your views don't fit into neat categories.

I'm lucky enough to be a "true" anarchist, but I describe myself as a libertarian to most people because "anarchist" has some weird connatations and isn't well-understood. I also call myself an "atheist" in terms of religion although that is accurate only according to the most liberal view of atheism and hardly covers every aspect of my belief system. Sometimes you have to make do.

[ QUOTE ]
I'd say this is one of the strongest Republican positions.

[/ QUOTE ]
You'd be right if he felt that abortion should be limited or gotten rid of. But he said this: "For the life of me I cannot figure out why I should care one way or another". The GOP has taken a pretty strong stance against abortion, so calling his position a Republican when is wrong. You're right that it isn't a libertarian position, though.

[ QUOTE ]
Republicans are no longer conservative.

[/ QUOTE ]
Some Republicans are no longer conservative (assuming those ones ever were). But in any case, his position still isn't a Republican one, even under this spend-happy administration. Do you honestly believe that if a bill stating that all children will be granted free education were to come up that it would get a majority of support from the GOP? If so, I think you're nuts.

[ QUOTE ]
This is very Republican.

[/ QUOTE ]
I think a significant portion of the "middle class" is Republican so it doesn't make much sense to say they support taxing the [censored] out of themselves. If you disagree that such a portion is significant, check out an electoral map of the 2004 election. You'll see a sea of red. They can't all be millionaires. Plus a lot of Republicans I know do not like the current tax system (small sample size, I know).

[ QUOTE ]
You seem to have the erroneous view that the Republican Party is about low taxes. Actually, the Republicans today are all about increased spending.

[/ QUOTE ]
And you seem to be erroneously thinking that if someone with an R at the end of his name does something, that that is consistent with the Republican platform.

[ QUOTE ]
Dem? Again you're using stereotypes instead of reality. This is a libertarian position indeed, but certainly not a Democratic position. The Dems support the war on drugs perhaps more than the Republicans, now that they've become the supporters of "protect-people-from-themselves" types of legislation. What major Democratic figure opposes the war on drugs?

[/ QUOTE ]
Woah, calm down. Notice dem was at the tail end of that. And in case you didn't notice, if we're trying to find what party he'd belong to, we won't be able to do so without using some stereotypes.

[ QUOTE ]
Yeah, but what kind of Independent actually likes both presidents? That's just weird. Hating both I understand, liking one but not the other I understand, liking them both? That sounds less Independent and more typical moderate. The Independents aren't usually very big on Clinton from what I've seen.

[/ QUOTE ]
While I can't speak for him, he didn't say that he liked both, just that he liked the economy under Clinton and the tax system under Bush. I went with Independent because you can't really label that position as Republican or Democrat.

[ QUOTE ]
Most of his sentiments do match mainstream Republican positions. But I suppose they also match mainstream Democratic positions. I'd call him a "moderate Republican" because he seems more Repub than Dem to me, but I can see him being a "moderate Democrat" too. Maybe he's just in the middle. I'm not sure I can tell the difference any more. Republicans like guns and Democrats like affirmative action? That's really about as substantial as the differences get.

[/ QUOTE ]
I agree with all this.

There are good political quizes out there that only take a few minutes. They can be fun and informative.

This is my favorite one, but others are good too.
