AK twice in a row - ok to smooth call?
This is .25/.50 The first time I'm in the cutoff with AKs. I put in a decent raise, get called by a couple, and the flop pairs my Kings. I bet about 1/2 the pot, everyone folds.
The very next hand, I get AKo. UTG, who was in the previous hand raises to 1.00. I call? My read on UTG was that he was a TAG, and a pretty good player. I'd been avoiding him a little. The table hadn't seen my previous hand, and if I got aggressive twice in a row, I figured they would figure I was just taking shots at the pot. I like to be able to represent something better than AK if I miss the flop and the board looks like nobody else hit, so I called here to keep him from putting me on a premium hand. Bad play? Is my logic here just retarded? |

Re: AK twice in a row - ok to smooth call?
a few pointers
1. you can do whatever you want. most poeple reraise, but calling is fine too. 2. No TAG who is a 'pretty good player' minraises UTG like that. hes not a good player, and his opener shows that. thats a donkbet 3. at the small end of SSNL, don't expect people to adjust thier play when you raise 2 times in a row. they might react after you raise 5-6 times in a row but they may also not. |

Re: AK twice in a row - ok to smooth call?
To represent something better than AK, wouldn't that require a preflop reraise most of the time? To represent a set to a TAG will consume a bit of chips and may not work.

Not reraising with AK isn't necessarily bad. Not doing it because you're afraid they won't believe you is. You want them to think you have nothing when you have something, this is a good situation.
EDIT : Just saw it was a minraise, repot it every time. |

Got it. I'm still pretty new to NL, so I'm doing my best here to get up to speed. Thanks for the help - that all makes sense.

Re: AK twice in a row - ok to smooth call?
With AK I sometimes like to just call a preflop raise as it disguises my hand and I may make more with a pair of Aces or Kings if they hit the flop then if I had reraised.
On the other hand, if several people have called the raise before it gets to you I will pop it back hard as the pot is now worth taking down immediately. |
