Michael O' Malley is of course correct.

i don't think it's about the bottom line as much as it is about the gesture. Greg(as was posted) tipped 50k, a fine amount that shows he at least aknowledged the work done. 100 bucks is just cruel

Raymer has already proven himself to be a classy guy in the past, why would we be surprised if he left a particularly generous tip after winning a large sum of money?

If this is true, that Greg Raymer left an ADDITIONAL $50,000 (which I seriously doubt, because Raymer is a smart guy) then I have lost all respect for him. If it is true, then he is indeed a fool.

[/ QUOTE ]

You wont have a need to lose respect for Greg.
The day after Greg won the Main Event we sat down and I explained to him how much money was taken out of the prize pool for the staff and exactly where that money went to. I even gave him a breakdown of about how much everyone would get.
Being the intelligent guy that he is and having been smart enough to get as much information as he possibly could, Greg then made an educated decision to leave an additional amount. He knew exactly where it would go and about how much everyone would receive out of that additional money.
There has never been a smarter tipper than Greg was on that day (excluding Barry Greenstein who takes a similar approach when he tips).

[/ QUOTE ]

Years ago, Greg had a number of posts on this forum (or maybe it was the MTT forum) in answer to the inevitable posts about how much one should tip. He talked about computing the number of dealers and the number of man-hours worked and so on and so forth, blah blah blah, all with the aim of coming up with a fair number. He took this kind of calculating approach long before he ever knew he would win the ME, so yeah, I can't say as how any of this surprises me.

Ok, they took a percentage of the prize pool for the dealing staff. This is NOT coming out of his $7.5 million, which means technically HE has tipped nothing.

The winners share was $7,650,000. Out of that they took $150,000, which went to dealers and staff. (Maybe just the dealers, I can't remember.) He netted $7,500,000. If you want to tip extra money on top of what they are already taking out, then be my guest. In my opinion you would be a fool, but it's your money, and the dealers will appreciate it. If on the other hand, you don't want to leave anything extra, then again, that is your business and should in no way be critiziced by anyone, except of course for the dealers and casino employees who post to this site and consider it kosher to whine, bitch and complain so that unsophisticated posters and newbies will think that you're correct.

Don't they take 3 percent from the prize pool? That means he's already tipped far more than is necessary.

I agree, but isn't the $100 tip just a jerk move? Isn't it just better to leave nothing and say "the tip was already taken out of the prize pool". What is the point to $100? It is like leaving the waitress an extra penny after the gratuity was added to the bill.

Like they previously said he is Aussie and doesn't know all the unwritten rules of tipping. But anyways $100 to a lot of people is a lot of money and buys plenty of stuff.

That being said this issue always arises and I think there is a ridiculous amount of pressure on the winner just because he won a large sum. Look at the Stolzman (sp?) incident.

Anyways the vig is sick nowadays so I don't see why any winner needs to tip tens of thousands or else he'd be villified.

Recently I played at Commerce and dealers would give this stupid silly smirk when someone tipped them a peach .50 chip. I don't get it, I'd never be ungrateful for FREE money and I would assume .50 adds up

So you're suggesting it's worse to give extra money just because it's not as large of an amount as some people think it should be? I'll never understand why someone would be considered less of a jerk if they gave $0 instead of $100.

Dealer tip from J. Hachem? A single $100 bill. What a schmuck.

[/ QUOTE ]

I thought there was 3% taken out of the prize pool to cover tips? If so, I wouldn't have even tipped $100

They already raked 2% of the prize pool for tourney workers, thats over $1,100,000.

I don't know how many staff members were involved but I'd guess they all got a pretty good chuck.

[/ QUOTE ]

Exactely. Tip the dealer(s) (more then $100), but only a complete sheep or someone with very few friends (and looking for more) would tip the staff for a job they are already being paid very well for.

Is he suppose to tip Hellmuth too for the commentary?

How about the press for the coverage?

[/ QUOTE ]

I followed the coverage... where's my tip?

each down dealt is a share of that 2% rake. one dealer figured the most any one dealer made was 12k. this is not an average but an estimate of the amount the dealer with the most downs received.

[/ QUOTE ]

12k for a weeks worth of work dealing cards... and they're bitching?

I read somewhere else that the Rio kept a whooping 4% for themselves (house cut) and the staff to run the event received 2% to split up. Binions was no where near this . Or was it? 4% plus the other things like rooms, food, booze, commerce.

If you go to a restaurant and they tack on an 18% gratuity because your party was larger than 8 people do you tip on top of that?
