this article mentions they give the contestants the list of words to study?
all these years i thought they were random??

My wife was a competitor back in the day, so I know this one.
The first few rounds use words that come from a list.

After a few rounds, it switches to words that aren't on any list.

They're not randomly chosen, though. The pronouncer guy has a list that he reads off of, the contestants don't know what's on the list though.

Beginning with the 29th round, the contest moved into words not included on the word list given to all contestants to study.

sorry for the hi-jack, but has anyone seen this documentary on spelling bee contestants??



If not, I highly recommend it. These kids are freaks and it is hilarious.

It's hilarious at times.
But it's also pretty inspiring and symbolic of the American Dream.
