Re: How much money does party lose/hour?
Maybe they *did* do upgrades during off-peak hours, but
the bugs/problems only come out when they experience a larger number of transactions/users. Also, maybe they *are* throwing $1 million at this problem? But they are simply growing too fast to keep up with themselves. Even if you throw all this money at the problem, it still takes time/risk to integrate it into the existing system. Plus, it's not just programming the client software, but remember they have to program the server-side. AND make it robust, secure, and be able to handle thousands (millions?) of actions per second -- quickly and accurately. That is far from a simple task. Anyone can develop a poker-client PROGRAM, but it's a LOT tougher to make it a real-world SYSTEM that scales. In addition, it's not just the software, but the hardware: they need big horking servers on the backend to handle all this stuff. And electricity. And network. And air-conditioning. And support staff. With redundancy, for hardware and staff. They also probably have some load-balancing traffic-directing servers in the front-end, so that's even more hardware. Then they have to keep up with OS & firmware updates, security patches and upgrades for all those devices. All these become points of failure in a extremely complex system. Everything is dependent on everything else, while working together, and expected to survive peak usage spikes without skipping a beat. Good Luck! You think 20-tabling 6-max is tough? BAH! On top of all that, the programmers and sys-admins are probably pressured by management to have zero downtime for maintenance/upgrades because they are losing $200K per hour, which only adds to the potential to screw up. Then the marketing department decides to surprise everyone with a new promo and the PP IT dept has to juggle this along with everything else on their plate. This is all conjecture but I'm guessing PP is experiencing what a lot of companies experienced during the dot-com days, except on an exponential scale. So even the most talented workers might have a tough time keeping up. Then again, during the dot-com days there were a lot of incompetent fools running businesses. |

I love all the E-CEOs in this thread. "why doesn't party just spend more money to solve these problems duh"
everyone bashes party because they appear to be inept, incompetent losers. but they wouldn't have gotten this far nor would they be no.1 if they weren't doing some things right. some problems aren't as easy as simply throwing money at it. |

Re: How much money does party lose/hour?
Simplistic,
I wasn't bashing Party. I don't have the foggiest idea of what it takes to run their operation. One of the posters made some good points about what it takes to run an internet gambling operation on that grand of scale. However, many of the other posters have pointed out that Stars doesn't seem to have the connectivity issues of Party. I own a construction company, so I am of the mindset that if it something is broken, you take it apart and rebuild it until it works. I just don't suppose that is possible in this case. Sigma |

Maybe they should try wrapping their turbans around the servers so sand doesn't get in them and cause them to crash. kidding, kidding, for the PC retarded crowd [/ QUOTE ] LOL I'm guessing they lose somewhere between 100 to 200 thousand per hour during primetime playing hours if u take the 600 million profits they made last year and divide them by 365 and so forth. |

How do you know this downtime isnt because of a system upgrade? Adding a new 100 gigabit switching server isn't a "flip of a switch" task. [/ QUOTE ] At peak hours.....wait this is party.....its what?? 6am there? Those aren't peak hours!! |
