Default More From ESPN

[ QUOTE ]
The Raleigh News & Observer published a story on Tuesday that revealed about a third of the Duke lacrosse team -- 15 players in all -- had faced previous charges that include underage alcohol possession, loud noise and public urination. Most of those charges, the story said, were resolved in deals with prosecutors that allowed the players to avoid criminal convictions. The story named names and served to galvanize critics who believe that athletes sometimes seem to function beyond the rules.

[ QUOTE ]
But according to the court order that was required to execute DNA testing, medical records "revealed the victim had signs, symptoms and injuries consistent with being raped and sexually assaulted vaginally and anally." The dancer was examined by a forensic sexual assault nurse.

[ QUOTE ]
The horrible question floating around in people's minds here: Did the lacrosse players make a special request for a black dancer that night? ESPN.com contacted several escort services like the one that provided the lacrosse players with two dancers. Representatives of two of the services said they typically send white dancers unless a special request is made. Were the players' actions premeditated in that respect? One of the views circulating in the community is stereotypical in its own way -- that white college frat boys, conditioned by hours of watching rap videos on television, see black women largely as objects of sexual desire.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
If Duke is a bastion of the elite, the men's lacrosse team represents an even more densely concentrated pool of privilege. The players have first names like Breck and Gibbs and Reade, and most of them attended prep schools. In fact, 26 of the 47 players come from the states of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, which annually are among the highest-income-per-capita states.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
"The fact that the DA is out in the public saying these boys are guilty is just extraordinary," said Joseph B. Cheshire V, who represents one of the captains.

[/ QUOTE ]

Jeez, who's the coach of this team, Barry Switzer? Gary Barnett? 15 arrests/wrist slaps in the last year?

Nasty story. Gonna get nastier before it's over, too.

BTW I wonder how much a NC lawyer named "James B. Cheshire V" charges the parents of Conn. prep school kids named Gibbs or Reade? And won't those kids have a fun time in prison.

And speaking of money, apparently the house was owned by DukeU and leased to some players. That won't be a small civil suit....

One thing mentioned in this thread that is 100% accurate, tabloid stories in general are driven by white suburean housewives, "soccer moms" if you want a name for it.

Any story that has strong appeal to them gets done to death.

Any story involving young pretty white girls and some sort of drama instantly becomes a media firestorm (Lacy Petterson, Natalie Holloway, Jean Benne Ramsey or whatever, etc.)

And as others had pointed out, if hte races were reversed (group of alleged black men, alleged white woman victim) it would indeed be a much bigger story, not so much because the media racist but due to the fact hte story would appeal alot more to soccer moms as they would be identifying with the alleged victim.

IMO this story is going to get bigger.

But you're right: If ten black BBall players from Mich St. were accused of raping a white stripper it would likely be a bigger story.

MSM would likely be more critical of a white stripper than a black one, tho. But some lil white girl/nursing student named Dylan from Grosse Pointe, tho? Off the freaking charts.

But this'll get ugly, too. I don't think there'll be a Duke lacrosse team next year. Machine demands a sacrifice and all. And the U is in big trouble for owning that house, IMO.

They orta just expel all the players, fire the coach, and offer the girls a quick mil; cut their losses; but I guess there's always that small matter of due process.

I suspect they will end up with broken fingernails a few time before all is said and done.

If this is true--I'd say they are toast if the DA can get a jury to his liking

"revealed the victim had signs, symptoms and injuries consistent with being raped and sexually assaulted vaginally and anally." The dancer was examined by a forensic sexual assault nurse."

You really have no idea of the American court system for a guy that claims to know everyone and anyone.

Just a reply in general...can we get a few more "allegedlys" thrown into posts here? A lot of talk as if it's 100% we know what happened.

Watched Scarborough Country tonight and it sounds like the DA is backpedalling big-time. But the circus is well underway.

[/ QUOTE ]

one step further, only coverage should be brief bits stating general info about the case as it proceeds

i.e. jury selection completed
opening arguments
closing arguments
jury's verdict
etc

and let the system go at it, I despise the media in these cases
