Chatting while playing allows me to attempt to play actual real sessions of poker. If I make myself focus, I might play better, but I won't play as long and most importantly (to me, see title plz) I won't enjoy myself.

It doesn't hurt my game to AIM and play, but the quality of my chat goes right down the tubes.

I have the same problem...except that I'm usually posting or PM'ing/responding in here rather than on AIM.

I keep AIM off because I want to focus on the tables!!!
So I just open 2+2 instead...because I'm a moron.

I believe that my monster downswing would almost NEVER have happened if it weren't for too many tables and 2+2-surfing.

I totally miss reads, then suddenly see that some guy has been there for 25 hands and has a VP of 81 and I really SHOULD be more focused on isolating him and taking his money, etc etc.

I too like the social-ness that one gets to have while 'working'.
But it helps if I limit the social-ness as much as I can (trying to close 2+2 every once in awhile).
Even just turning on a movie on TV or starting up some music can keep me reasonably entertained and going while still grinding out my hands.

if you want to socialise, i suggest you get the table talking. Its good for reads and i generally find i play better when i chat to my opponents.

But im a AIM and MSN whore. Always got gf moaning to me on msn and crap... i just cant resist msn or aim..... Its bad

I doubt it affects your winrate.... maybe .1BB over long run? pft its immpossible to say.

Just learn to type faster!!!!

I think that AIM or 2+2 posting/surfing can hurt your win-rate WAY more than .1BB

It depends on the player of course.

Chatting with your opponents as a substitute actually is a pretty decent idea.

When I'm playing on interpoker and chatting...typing is so hard (because inter always steals focus) that I'm often so focussed on trying to get the damn text typed before inter steals focus that I lose even more focus on the tables.

TweakUI should help you immensely in this area.

i usually talk on aim, browse 2+2 or myspace and play 4-6 tables. i think it sometimes makes me lose my attention from playing but i don't think it really affects my winrate.

i mean, since you play poker for a living you probably don't get too much social interaction as it is, so turning off all the lights in your house and putting on your noise cancelling headphones and getting in the zone, if you will, takes a lot of the fun out of it.

my two points that i was trying to make kind of ran together in that last paragraph, but i was trying to say you grind all the time which can make poker not fun anymore, so just playing and not talking to people if you like to do that sort of thing can make you not like to play as much.

Tweak UI is the greatest thing out there. It stops the cursor stealing.
