This point struck home recently, while watching a History Channel special on Hitler, titled I think "The rise and fall of evil" when my young nephew correctly, I think, pointed out that if Hitler had landed in England, we may have been sitting watching the "The rise and fall of genius".
Edit: Before I get dumped on and/or banned from this site, I wish to point out that I do not support anything Hitler did. This is simply a note about the winners writing history.
