Ah, condemning speculators! The funny part is that speculators actually relieve shortages. They buy up supplies when they are plentiful, hoping to resell them later when they are scarce. Successful speculators level prices better than govt institutions which attempt to do the same thing. If Venezuela does manage to get rid of the "unscrupulous speculators," they'll just find their shortages worsening. The 60% of Venezuelans who voted for this douche are getting what they deserve; I feel sorry for everyone else.

Yeah, the sad thing is, the cure (capitalism) is always mis-diagnosed as the disease. They'll keep Chavez because they'll believe his BS. The best politicians are often the best liars (see Bill Clinton).

Bill Clinton had a brain too, puts him ahead of the competition even if he was a liar, don't you think?

HEHE I was jealous of your CDM photo and thought of it imiediatly so I had to go make my own.

In regards to the O.P. I can't wait to rub this in the face of my Venezuelan brother-in law. He's a sound bite left winger and "changed his mind" about Chavez and now thinks "He is good for the people" lololol

I submit that Bill Clinton is a better capitalist than George W Bush -- and that it's not even close.

Anyone care to argue against that ?

This is certainly timely, as I was just reading the relevant chapters in Economics in One Lesson last night. The description of events is pretty much spot-on, right down to the blaming of shortages on "hoarders and speculators." Soon enough Chavez will be setting the price of everything in Venezuela as shortages crop up on each price-controlled product. Maybe eventually the black market will become the de facto market for all these goods and the whole scheme will collapse?

Good stuff, good stuff.

Even if the black market is chugging along merrily, the large cost of risk of being imprisoned or killed for participating still prevents it from operating as a surrogate for a real free market.

The increased risks inherent in black markets drive up prices. A similar principle is at work as in the illegal drug markets.
