Venezuela suffering through meat and sugar shortages
Oops.
My favorite part: [ QUOTE ] President Hugo Chavez's administration blames the food supply problems on unscrupulous speculators, but industry officials say government price controls that strangle profits are responsible. [/ QUOTE ] |

That entire article is gold. Nice find.

Re: Venezuela suffering through meat and sugar shortages
price controls do not work, why would a grocer sell products at government price when he can make 2x as much in the black market.
chavez would be much better off calculating how much meat, sugar, ... people consume each month and have the government produce it and give it away. |

[/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] Here is my favorite part... [ QUOTE ] Government officials dismiss any problems with price controls, while state TV has begun running tickers urging the public to "denounce the hoarders and speculators" through a toll-free phone number. "The weight of the law will be felt, and we demand punishment," Information Minister Willian Lara said Wednesday. [/ QUOTE ] Wow, finally a country that has a leader worse than and scarier than Bush... |
Re: Venezuela suffering through meat and sugar shortages
wow, that didnt take long!
I figured with all their petro dollars they might be able to sustain a socialist society for at least a couple of years. |
Re: Venezuela suffering through meat and sugar shortages
So you're saying socialism doesn't work? Bizarre.

Re: Venezuela suffering through meat and sugar shortages
Ah, condemning speculators! The funny part is that speculators actually relieve shortages. They buy up supplies when they are plentiful, hoping to resell them later when they are scarce. Successful speculators level prices better than govt institutions which attempt to do the same thing. If Venezuela does manage to get rid of the "unscrupulous speculators," they'll just find their shortages worsening. The 60% of Venezuelans who voted for this douche are getting what they deserve; I feel sorry for everyone else.

The best politicians are often the best liars (see Bill Clinton). |
