Re: GOP to twentysomethings: No sex for you
the notion of reducing single-parent households is really [censored] important, actually. this is just a terrible way to do it. but on the face of it the intentions are more admirable than the war on drugs or tobacco (until you realize that it's more religious pandering than actual policy).

[/ QUOTE ] as a social worker this is (was) one of the most common trends among my clients. poverty and single parent homes. thing is, there are millions of kids under the age of ten in this situation today. their parents aren't all going to get back together. so we have to come up with a solution to the current problem AND find a way to reduce the trend in the coming years. but we have to accept that it's a phenomenon we'll be dealing with for the foreseeable future, and shift policy accordingly. |

I really don't see the value of it. [/ QUOTE ] statistically speaking, being from a single parent household is one of the best predictors for all sorts of childhood problems, including drug use, academic failure, prison time, abuse or neglect, etc etc. not just for poor kids either (although poverty is another major factor). where i differ from a lot of cultural conservatives is in thinking we can return to the 'old' way of doing things when we've got an entire generation for whom divorce or single parenthood is perfectly natural. what we have to do is figure out how to adjust to the new family paradigm. either people will gravitate to more stable structures on their own, society will impose or generate a way to compensate, or things will keep getting worse. |

Re: GOP to twentysomethings: No sex for you
I would love to see how that $50 million dollars is spent. It hard to fathom spending that much money to tell adults not to have sex.
I also wonder if there's any chance there could be any effect? I wouldn't be surprised if the effect was something like 50 adults who would have had sex didn't... spending $1 million per adult who now waited. |
