I would say he had a pair of 5's. A poor play on his part obviously but it happens all the time especially early. He probably put you on a couple of high cards and thought his hand was good. Also...

Personally I think check/folding the flop is too weak. If that was what you planed to do if an over card hit the flop then you should have folded to the reraise. But if you going to call a reraise...
