Wii Games ---- Reviews
I think it'd be cool if everyone who has played a new game on the Wii could write up a short review so we could see which games are worth buying. I'll start.
Zelda: awesome, obv. Excite Truck: Actually a pretty fun game. Unlike most racing games where you try to cross the finish line first, the goal of Excite Truck is to destroy as much stuff before you get to the finish line. The controls work pretty well, the soundtrack is good, and you can perform some cool jumps and tricks. Not much replay value but good for at least a few hours of entertainment. Call of Duty 3 and Red Steel: I'm not a big fan of first person shooter games so I might be a little biased. I don't really care much for these games. The controls don't seem to work that well and personally I think games like this are probably much better on an Xbox 360. Rampage: Good for mindless, arcade-style fun. You can play the older NES/N64 Rampage games which is a big plus. |

Although none are extremely well developed, it is still quite enjoyable as a party game. The single player is much shorter than in the past, but is still pretty good IMHO. |

Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Excellent game that uses the Wiimote in very creative ways. Get ridicuolo hard in the later levels (you can set it to easy, but that's like saying "I'm a loser so I'll pick loser mode now"), but it's a good kind of hard. Like the olden days of video games hard. The kind of hard that builds up good tension. Like when your patient is 3 seconds way from flatlining and you have to surture all those damn cuts. Rayman Raving Rabbids Rabbids are funny as hell. But the game doesn't really hold up single player. Might be good for a lard with a few friends. Drunk. |

[/ QUOTE ] Seconded. This game is amazing and does get really challenging later on. Madden on the Wii would be great if it had an online multiplayer. The controls take some getting used to but it's pretty satisfying. Zelda- Obviously great possibly the best Zelda ever Red Steel- Fun but not great. Definitely worth renting and I'm not displeased with having bought it. I really want to check out Elebits, Rayman, and Excite Truck. I'm also pretty happy about the ability to play all the Gcube games I missed because I didn't own one. So I'm going to be picking up copies of Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, and Metroid Prime Echoes in the near future. |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
Zelda - I liked playing OOT better, but I think that TP is a much better made game.
Monkey Ball - Best multiplayer game out at the moment. Not as good as the gamecube version. Not extremely fun, but good as a party game until something better comes out. Marvel - I hate it. Worst RPG I've ever played. You control 1 of 4 characters that are always playing. So even if you don't do anything you will still pretty much kill everything. Perhaps if you always have 4 people to play with it would be fun, but not worth it IMO. |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
Has anyone played Far Cry? I rented it and its pretty cool so far. Controls took a little getting used to because you always have to have the remote pointed in the right spots, but once you get that down its fun. Im not very far so I cant really tell if its going to get better or not.
I also have Marvel and barely played it. Its not bad Im just not into it right now. Its just like X Men Legends I and II, which I have so its not like I dont enjoy the type of game. Zelda, everyone knows about. Im playing it along with a friend who is only over a couple times a week so its annoying not beating it already, far enough in the game to not want to start from the beginning though. |

I tried to get into it, but the graphics turned me way off. I was really excited about it too, so that sucks. I've been avoiding it ever since. Rented Super Swing Golf the other day. A better golf sim than the Wii Sports version, but why does it have to be so anime/gay/stupid graphics-wise? I'm really putting a lot of faith in Tiger '07 just kicking all ass. It had better do so. I must admit, I'm pretty disappointed with the game offerings thus far. I thought the motion-sensing capabilities would add a lot more realism to games, especially sports games. Basically, I wan't to be able to swing the WiiMote like a golf club and have it accurately detect the plane, clubhead speed, position of the WiiMote at impact (open/closed face etc), and follow-through, if not much much more. So far I'm getting discouraged that this is even possible. I would love for someone to prove me wrong. I understand that "game developers need to learn the new capabilities of the Wii before they can exploit it to it's fullest potential." Well, if that's the case, don't waste my time and money with half-assed offerings, and work harder... I'll wait. |

Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
Madden uncovers what I feel is a more satisfying way to play the game, but that is probably just because I'm so freaking bored with the same old game year after year. The controls can be somewhat frustrating, especially on defense where they are not really intuitive at all, but wholly just a refreshing experience. I expect big things out of the next version.
I couldn't stand Rayman. Sure, the games were various, but I couldn't help but think that I was doing the same thing over and over again. The rhythm game and the shooter were fun, but the rest of the games were just boring. Using the same cutscenes at every level was quite dull. Overall, very disappointing. Trauma Center was so much fun to play. I stopped playing Zelda altogether while I blew through this game a couple of times (yes, mostly on "Loser" setting). It's just totally different than anything I've ever played and I was drawn in from the start. So imaginative. Sure, it's just a DS port, but I'd never played that version, so it was brand new to me. The presentation of the storyline and dialogue were pretty lame, but forgivable. When surgery starts it's just so intense. It doesn't have a ton of replayability unless you are a goal whore who must master every level, but I'd consider it the perfect rental game. |

Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
I've only played three games so far, but here's what I thought:
Wii Sports: really simple controls and honestly feels more like a demo disc than a proper game, but the games are very fun. Tennis is amazingly fun, great as a party game (if you have lots of room!) Tires out your arm, but it's so fun you won't care. Zelda: Almost beat it right now and I've enjoyed it. The level design is beautiful and the controls are a lot of fun. I wish it had a little more combat action, but then I'm the kind of person that will play endurance mode on Dynasty Warriors for hours on end. Excitetruck: This was the first game I played and it completely turned me off of the Wii. The Wiimote's horizontal orientation is so unreasonably awfully bad. I will never play a game that uses that 1 and 2 buttons. |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
Got my wii with sports, zelda, tony hawks and rayman.
There's enough comments on sports and zelda and I haven't played rayman yet so I'll talk about tony hawks. Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam: A twist on the usual Tony Hawk's series of games. You race other skaters through down-hill courses using the wii remote to steer and do tricks. You hold the Wii remote on it's side so that your left thumb is on the D-Pad and your right thumb is on the 1 and 2 buttons. You tilt the pad from left to right for steering, button 2 is the usual tony hawks speed/jump button and also does hold tricks in the air, button 1 grinds and does flip tricks in the air. Doing tricks increases your boost bar and you can shake the Wii remote to do a boost. I'm not too keen on the stadnard racing levels. Tony Hawk's games have never really been about racing other skaters. Luckily there are variations such as levels where you try to cause as much damage as yo can, slap as many people as you can, get as many points as you can with tricks etc. and these levels are lots of fun. At first I thought the steering method was annoying and lame. It seemed really unresponsive. (I guess that's what hmkpoker is saying about Excite Truck?) I'd say it took over an hour until I was comfortable with it but now I think it's fine..... just takes some getting used to. Graphics are nothing special. Pretty much gamecube standard. But some of the later courses are some very nice eye candy. A decent game all in all but maybe would be a better game to rent for a weekend rather than buy. |

Controllers since genesis have been ergonomically modeled to fit nicely in the palms of your hand and now...this. It's worse than the original NES controller. |

just bought a wii. i got monkey ball and trauma center with it. i haven't tried them yet, only played wii sports which was fun. i'm obviously getting zelda and thinking about getting Call of Duty 3 even though I generally haven't liked FPS's (except for goldeneye). any comments on that one? most games i want don't come out until march 30th, except for wario ware which i'm thinking of getting |

[/ QUOTE ] I would advise against geting Call of Duty 3. I don't like FPSs anyway so I'm probably biased, but my roommate does like them and he thinks COD3 is pretty mediocre. At least rent it or something before dropping the $50. I finally got around to getting Super Monkey Ball. I'm impressed. Like other people have said, there are some really fun party games and the single-player mode is pretty fun too. |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
My 9-year would play the Monkeyball mini-games all night. Rayman is great for the Party game aspect. I think we spent close to an hour hammer throwing that cow last night.
Zelda - Awesome. Marvel Alliance -- We only play with 4 people and it's fun. However it does get repetitive. I grew up reading Marvel comics so I am definitely not teh most unbiased source here. |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
Finally scored a Wii last week when I went into my local EB games on a whim and asked when they would be in...snagged the last one. Sweet.
Elebits - Unique game that makes good use of the wiimote and chuck. Its another wacky Japanese gem like pikmin although it falls just short of pikmin in my opinion. Controls You have a capture gun which you aim with the remote. Use the chuck to move around. Its a bit like a FPS but without the gore. You open cabinets and turn doorknobs with the remote twisting the remote and pulling back. Game Play: Catch the elebits and charge up your capture gun. The gun moves furniture and break stuff depending on how many watts of elebits you've captured. With a good charge, you can fling pianos around. Overall, unique concept and fun game thats good for the kids. |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
I'll add my thoughts here:
Obviously, Zelda is amazing. I'm addicted and will probably start doing poorly in school as a result... Wii Sports: Enough has been said about this, but I love it. Golf and Bowling (and the associated mini games) are amazing. I only wish there were more holes for golf. Rayman: I really liked this. It's best when going through it with a close friend or two. Cutscenes, though repetitive, are hilarious, and there are some very good games. Monkey Ball: This is the game that suprised me. I loved the first two, but I couldn't get into this at all. I rented it, and thought the single player was decent (I wasn't too acclimated to the controls yet) and I figured the party games would be good for multiplayer, so I bought the game. Uh oh. Once I started playing the mini games, I was very disappointed. Very frustrating, and few gems in the whole bunch. It seems that other people on here liked the game more than I did, and I respect that opinion, but me personally, I traded it in to buy Rayman, and I'm happy with that. |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
I haven't had a game console since the original Nintendo so these are not "gamer" reviews...
Zelda - very cool so far just getting started, but I am enjoying it. Trauma Center - Awesome and very fun. Controls are great, I thought it was going to be too easy, but whoa it gets tough quickly. Need for Speed Carbon - This is one of my favorite games. It took me a while to find a control scheme I liked. I ended up using wiimote for the gas pedal and nunchuk for steering. Best part is cruising around and then going on half hour high speed chases with the police. Elebits - Very cool game and a great demo for the controls. Not something I would play a lot of straight, but I play a level once a week or so. Barnyard - Got this one for the kids. Seems OK - simple game with only single player mode. Cars - This one has two modes - one for children and an adult one. Basically drive around radiator springs doing mini games and then intermittently big races. I actually enjoy it - although it does get somewhat repetitive. Rapala Fishing - This one is meh. They could have done a much better job of using the motion control. Seems like they just rushed it into production. Wii Sports - I think it is great entertainment. Bowling for shots is fun - the wife and I play this at least once a day. Mostly Bowling and the training games. Wish there were more courses available for golf though. Super Swing Golf - Real anime theme to this game which I am not crazy about - but it does make good use of the wiimote and there are plenty of different modes from match to stroke to tourney play. I have Warioware Smooth moves on the way and Wii Play on pre-order. I am looking forward to the pool on Wii play the most. I don't remember video games being this fun. BTW random thing I messed up at first - if you have surround sound you need to go into options to turn it on your wii console and then on Super swing golf you have to turn it one from the game too. Well long time lurker but I think this thread is a good opportunity for me to start posting.
Wii Zelda - Enough has been said about the game. Personally, I think its a bit overrated but its definately worth the money. Im just about to finish it and Ill clock in at around 45 hours. Most of the time spent has been very enjoyable. Wii sports - I find it pretty boring to play single player but its really fun multiplayer. None of the games have the depth needed to really make it worth sitting there playing by myself. My friends and I have found golf to be the best of the bunch. Too bad it only has 9 holes. Virtual Console Mario 64 - Definately worth the 10 dollars. Its incredible that this game came out over 10 years ago. It obviously has some outdated parts to it but the majority of it holds up. A perfect game to sit down and play for short periods of time. Its nice when Im done getting ready for work early and I have like 15 minutes to kill. Its enough time to get a star or 2...or at least figure out where the next star is and how you can get it. Gunstar Heroes - An excellent 2D shooter in the mold of Contra. Its a short game but the co-op is excellent. The bosses are extremely well designed and there are plenty of them. My friend and I beat it in one night on normal difficulty but it was a blast. We also tried out the hard mode and theres plenty of challenge there. Gamecube I know technically its a different system but I have a feeling a lot of people that have the wii didnt have a gamecube like me. Fire Emblem - Holy Crap!!! If you like strategy rpgs this is as good as it gets. My favorite game of all time is shining force 2 so im very biased to this genre. Ive only just really started the game but so far its right up there with it. The characters are so well developed and theres a ton of strategy involved. Every battle is intense because if a character dies hes gone for good. If you like this type of game at all then this is an absolute must get. |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
Rayman is WAY better than monkeyball. We rented MB for a week and many of the mini-games are unplayable. Rayman is great with kids (my four-year old daughter absolutely loves it).

Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
i just started playing rayman (i've had it since release day and have been consumed by sports/zelda) last night, and OMG very fun. love it. i'm going to be addicted to it for a while i'm sure...
i still need to get elebits and trauma too |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
I bought Wario Ware yesterday and played for an hour or so. I should note that I have never played any previous version of WW, so I really had no idea what to expect other than the game coverage at IGN/Gamespot.
The game itself is a blast so far. It's really fun, and sometimes frantic, to figure out what you're supposed to do in each of the microgames in such a short amount of time. Most of the time it's as simple as one motion to advance to the next one. Occasionally it becomes a bit more complex, but to this point nothing even remotely hard. As the pace quickens throughout each level it becomes a game just to get the remote into proper position before the next microgame actually begins. The different positions that you hold the remote in are a riot, though possibly unnecessary in many instances. I'm pretty sure you could hold it in default "remote control" mode for most cases and it would work just fine. But that's so much of the game's fun that it would seem silly to do so. The cutscenes in between each level are what has annoyed me so far. They are really well presented, in an anime sort of way, but they are really rather painful to watch. This is due largely to their inherent nonsense and irrelevance to the game at hand (at least that I can see to this point), but mostly because it cuts up the game action too much. It's fun to play the games, much less fun to watch these crazy scenes, yet you can't skip a scene until you've already seen it in its entirety. Replayability is not likely to be a high point. |
Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
Rayman
Excellent game, I'm not normally a fan of the "minigame" style of play, but I love the pure sillyness of this! my kids love it too. Longevity looks good too, we've been playing it since Xmas and are only about 1/2 way through story mode Wii Sports Agree with everyone else, this is a nice introduction to the control system, but does get a little repetative Call of Duty 3 Not so impressed with this, I'm finding the controls a little hard to master, especially the greandes! I'm actually thinking of ebaying this and buying something else. Wii play Some great fun games, probably better for the non-gamer or kids, but well worth the price considering it is bundled with a second wii-mote. I'm somewhat hooked on the "tank" game Mat |

Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
I've been playing more VC/GCN than wii games as well.
Super Mario Brothers/Legend of Zelda - Not much to say except they're perfectly emulated and the suspend feature adds quite a bit to both games. R-TYPE - I'd never played this particular game before but I did like the side-scroller shooter genre as a kid. This one definitely held up over the years and I'll probably download the sequel once I've beaten it. Xevious - I haven't played the VC version but I remember the NES version sucking, and then I went and illegally played in on an emulator just to make sure it was the game I thought it was. It still sucks. It's repetitive and obnoxious, it doesn't have levels and never ends; basically the only reason I can see them selling it is because it did well back when it was a port of a popular arcade game, and they're hoping old fans will remember it being better than it is. Imagine something like 45 minutes of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1JPGG0Slm0 and that's basically the entire game. If you want a vertical shooter get R-TYPE and then turn your TV on its side. |

Re: Wii Games ---- Reviews
Super Monkey Ball:Banana Blitz was a disappointment for me. I was a huge fan of the original, and had very high expectations.
First off, there are 50 minigames, but most of them don't work very well, and some are just completely broken. Even with 50 minigames, they left out billiards, and they replace monkey fight with monkey boxing, which isn't as good as Wii Boxing. Although to the developer's credit, the FPS game (Monkey Wars) works better than Red Steel. Secondly, the single player mode wasn't that great. The jumping adds some gameplay options, but I think it ruins the simplicity that made the original so great. ---- Zelda is not only a great game, but a decent bargain. It took me 53 hours to beat the thing and I only completed some of the side quests. --- Madden 07 was the most fun I've had playing a football game since Tecmo Bowl. --- Elebits didn't do much for me. It is definitely the kind of game you'll either love or hate. Reminded me too much of searching for my car keys. |

METAL SLUG: An excellent game if you loved the old school arcade versions. 2-d Sidescroller that is alot of fun. It comes with 6-7 versions of the game i believe which is pretty awesome and there are like 7 different configurations you can use the wiimote in.
The game is also pretty challenging if you try to beat it without dying since its pretty much impossible (most people use like 18-25 continues). I myself can only beat the first level w/o dying and them all hell breaks loose. |

Gunstar Heroes-Classic 2-d shooter. If you ever enjoyed any sidescroller shooter then gunstar heroes is a must download. Short game, but lots of fun. Also it is very replayable with different weapon layouts and difficulty settings. Also coop with a friend is a lot of fun Dungeon Explorer-I had heard it was a decent gauntlet clone that let you play with up to 5 people. But honestly you are much better off waiting for gauntlet. |

More VC Reviews
Super Castlevania IV-A great adventure that is still worth playing today. If you have no other means of playing this game other than the wii, and have never played it before, it is probably a good download. A few caveats though. Don't expect a game like Symphony of the Night. This is a old school action game where there is a series of stages and no overlapping castle. Also, this game can get frustrating at times. While there a health bar, falling in a pit=insta-death. If you don't like starting levels over again don't bother. R-Type 3: Classic old school shooter with great graphics, and gameplay. One problem, while Castlevania is slightly frustrating, R-Type is mindnumbingly frustrating. One hit, and you restart the level. Unlike Gunstar Heroes, there is no difficulty setting, or health bar. Just one extremely hard default setting. If you consider yourself hardcore, by all means go for it. |
