Default I hate SitNGos (LC) (Crosspost)

I played SitNGos exclusively for about 6 months, and it really helped my short-handed game, FT game, and push/fold game. But I really hate them. I played 12 of them last night, and I finished OOTM in 11 of them. Big deal, I know. But at the end of it all, I was screaming at the computer and remembering all the bad feelings I used to feel. Which is interesting, because I suffer bad beats in MTTs much more often than I do in SnGs. But they don't upset me nearly as much. I think I figured out the reason why.

When I play an MTT, I expect to lose . It's not that I play to lose, or that I'm afraid of getting my chips all in the middle. It's just that, mathematically, no matter how well I play, I will probably lose. If I get all of my chips in the middle 4 or 5 or 6 times, and I am the favorite everytime, I am still probably going to lose. So I'm usually okay when the bad beats come. Not always, but usually.

With an SnG, I expect to win . I usually finish ITM around 45% of the time, but that's not good enough. Every game I play, I expect to win. The edge is so small (20% ROI = $10 profit on the $25 SnGs I was playing) that it takes many wins to make up for a bad run. But a win is not really earth-shattering. So the losses hurt worse, and the wins are not as good.

Nobody has to agree with me. It's just my personal experience. I know there is a logical flaw underneath it all, but feelings don't always correspond to logic.

I've never thought about it like that before, but it makes sense. For as much as single-table players know that have it good (mathematically) in terms of variance over time, that expectation of winning does slant us toward whining about it a lot more than the MTT players who fully expect to go on large negative runs and then make it all up at once. Put your faith in The Numbers, and all will be well.

yea im on a bad streak too. down about $70 from my peak (25% of my BR.) and itd take like 3-4 straight wins to get back to it, which is pretty hard when i cant get a hand and when i do it gets outdrawn.

This belongs in BBV, not the MTTF.

Or psychology.

But not here.

I feel completely different about it. If I lose a STT, I have invested 20-30 minutes and know I'll play another 30-40 of them in a day.

If I lose a MTT, I have wasted hours.

I was just talking to a friend of mine about this very thing.

Since I work full time, I don't normally get to play a lot of MTT's, but would much prefer them over SnG's. Unfortunately, my nights are spent grinding out SnG's.

I was off work for a week and entered as many MTT's as I could and got lucky and made 4 FT's, winning 1. I know that this is mostly variance, but just comparing $ amounts makes me even more disgusted playing SnG's. I grind away all night playing SnG's for a couple hundred, and maybe get up a grand in a good week. I get one good MTT win that makes up for 4 months of grinding SnG's, and it's really hard to go back to the grind.

It just seems disgusting the sheer volume you have to play in order to get anywhere.

I don't mean to be a nit, but

You don't ITM 45% of the time, and

20% of $25 is not $10.

I kinda echo that, I know I hit 40% ITM and 20% ROI in sng's and I just plow along knowing that's the way it is. I became even more emotionally disconnected when I switched to the turbos because I deliver plenty of bad beats because I'm pushing when I'm in trouble. I also don't get stung by the beats because I don't really blame anyone for pushing any 2 when the blinds get high. I just plug along making sure I play smart and get my quota. It sounds like you need to work on emotional control for all of poker not just MTT's. Your running bad, it's OK you'll find a heater right around the corner gl mate.

20% ROI = $5 profit in a $25 Sng. And this is just a bad beat post.
