Phil Gordon leaves Celebrity Poker Showdown, Hellmuth may replace.

Phil Gordon, host of Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown, is leaving the show to explore other opportunities. Gordon’s camp confirmed this by phone earlier today.

In an official statement, Gordon said, “I no longer have any contracted obligations to the producers of Celebrity Poker Showdown, so I am ready to move on… After 42 episodes of Celebrity Poker, I just want to see people play in turn, bet more than $200 into a $5K pot, and know when they have the nuts. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than saying ‘Phil Hellmuth loses another big pot, and it looks like he’s ready to implode!’ on national television.”

Ironically, Phil Hellmuth himself is reportedly in the running to replace Gordon in the host spot. Bravo reps refused to confirm this, but in a recent interview with ALL IN, Hellmuth disclosed that he was in meetings with the Celebrity Poker people, adding, “Maybe, if the time considerations work, then it’s possible—it’s possible—that I’ll get involved."

man, i always thought Phil Gordon seemed like a really chill, laid-back dude on TV. I didn't know he had this type of edge to him...

I think this gives me greater respect for him.

He actually would prefer to call 'real' poker. I don't think it means he has en edge. I think it just means that he's stuck calling poker with a bunch of people who have no idea what they're doing.....nobody denies this.


Assuming he considers himself a 'real' broadcaster (which I believe he does) this is the equivilent of some NBA announcer getting stuck broadcasting some random Rock-and-Jock charity-game each week.
ANY basketball announcer would prefer to call real basketball games.
ANY poker announcer would prefer to be broadcasting the WSOP or other major events.


I don't blame Phil at all for wanting to pursue other opportunities.

I loved when he basically called Jeff Gordon an idiot for folding to a very small all-in raise.

(I think it was something like Gordon raising to 3000, someone going all-in for only 600 more, and Gordon folding.)

gordon is a funny guy...for someone who's not a real broadcaster he's done a pretty good job. Normally you can't get a combo from an announcer who is knowledgeable about the game and entertaining.

I hear tho he does have a big ego. If you read the Negreanu post when he is filming for Play Like the Pros. Gordon, Hellmuth, and Matusow get in this ego contest. I also read from Matt Dean's blog (guy who got 6th or 7th 2 years ago at the WSOP) how Gordon was belittling him in an arrogant manner.

After 42 episodes, he probably has enough to start up as a poker comedian. There was some midget woman (I mean, celebrity...) on one of the shows who turned the nut straight (board not paired, no flush possibilities) and folded after a small bet. Ah, midgets playing poker...
