I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread about this yet, as I think this is every bit as big as the Upton call up.
[ QUOTE ] Tigers designate Monroe, promote top prospect Maybin Posted: Friday Aug 17, 2007 2:17 PM DETROIT (AP) -The Detroit Tigers designated slumping outfielder Craig Monroe for assignment Friday, a season after he helped them make a surprising run to the World Series. The Tigers promoted 20-year-old outfielder Cameron Maybin, one of the top prospects in the minors, from Double-A Erie. They also recalled infielder Ramon Santiago from Triple-A Toledo and optioned infielder Omar Infante to their top minor league team. Detroit made the moves before Friday night's game against New York at Yankee Stadium. The Tigers began the day with a half-game lead in the AL Central. The 30-year-old Monroe was hitting only .222 with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs in 99 games. The left fielder had been recently sidelined because of the flu. Monroe batted .255 with 28 homers and 92 RBIs last year, then tied a franchise record by hitting five home runs in the World Series. He also tied for second among AL outfielders with 12 assists. Monroe signed a one-year contract for $4,775,000 in the offseason, getting a raise from $2.8 million. Maybin was expected to be with the Tigers on Friday night. He started the season at Class A Lakeland, hitting .304 with 10 homers, 44 RBIs and 25 stolen bases, and moved up Erie. The Tigers purchased his contract after he hit .400 with four home runs and eight RBIs in six games at Double-A. Santiago batted .263 with three homers and 30 RBIs at Toledo. [/ QUOTE ] As the world's biggest CMo hater, I can honestly say I was giddy when I heard "Craig Monroe" and "Designated for Assignment" in the same sentence. How is this going to shake out? Is Maybin their fourth outfielder who will rarely see a start or will he be sorta platooning with Granderson in CF against lefties and in LF with Thames seeing more playing time at 1st against righties? Andy Pettitte takes the mound tonight for the Yanks, go ahead and put him out there! |
