New Poster AQo in BB

New poster here looking to get some advice on this hand.

Villian seems to be a pretty decent player 15/9/2.4

Preflop: Hero is BB with Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
5 folds, Villian raises, 2 folds, Hero calls.

Flop: (4.50 SB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero bets, Villian raises, Hero calls.

Turn: (4.25 BB) K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero checks, Villian bets, Hero calls.

River: (6.25 BB) 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero checks, Villian bets, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 8.25 BB

Is it okay to check-call down in this situation. I didn't put him on a flush because I don't think he would be value raising heads up on the flop. I don't give him credit for AK because he's in late position and could just be trying to steal. I'm thinking he has a weaker ace than me. Is check-calling the right play here?

Also, should I consider 3-betting here preflop if I think he is trying to steal? Or does being out of position suggest I should probably just call.

I would advocate make it 3 to go on the flop. More often than not, your pair is bigger here or his ace is weaker. Unless he hit two pair or something on the flop, you are ahead. It will also help define his hand. If he caps, I would check call down. If he calls, I would lead turn and river, depending on cards of course.

I don't care for the cold call pre-flop (I'm probably 3-betting) but since you did I'd rather see a c/r on the flop lead the turn. This is late enough that villain could open raising more than AK, KK, or sum-in sum-in clubs.

The call down is fine as played.

Preflop, you have two options. Three-bet it and lead any flop if called or simply call and check/raise a decent amount of flops. You went with a different approach which I wouldn't do since you stand to win close to the minimum if you're ahead since he may call down with worse hands (you miss an extra bet gained from a check/raise) if not outright fold on the flop or turn. Since you simply called preflop, I check/raise the flop and call down if he 3-bets, or call the flop and turn, then donk the river. That way, he may continue to spew with a worse ace or a pocket pair while saving you money if he has AK.

But you did donk the flop, so the rest looks ok.

If he is a decent player his open raising standards here are fairly wide and you should be ahead of his range. 3-betting pre flop allows you to get a much better idea of where you stand as most opponents' 4-betting range is pretty small.

As played I probably c/r the flop but if you lead I think you should be hoping he raises so u can 3 bet.

This is an automatic 3 bet from the bb with CO opening the pot. Even a 15/9 guy will have loose standards for raising when he has the CO position unless he's a total nit and folds JTo/QTo here.

If he 4 bets here, I'd probably check/call all streets.

As the hand was played.. donk-bet/call is fine for flop, I guess, but I think you should c/r turn.
