Looks good to me

He is either trying a dumb sexy with a flush or 76 or playing 87, 86, 9x and 5x really weird

Based on the logic of the hand you can fold the river becuz when the villain checks the turn he is likely making a defensive play with a marginal made hand, and all marginal made hands beat your hand. Plus the villain also did bet the river. His turn play combined with his river bet and his flop check/raise lead me to believe that folding the river is best. I thought you played the hand well.

I think this decision is very close due to the odds you are getting from the pot. I've seen enough players play two busted overs this way. After OP checks the turn, you can expect many villians to bet the river with any two cards. I'd consider a call here. It's probably about EV neutral and provides info. on the unknown.

looks fine, my guess is he's either got scared of the flush or playing stupid with one.

I think you see 5x here a lot and less often 9x. I don't think I have ever seen a cr by a flush on a board like this after that flop action. If I thought 5x could fold this river I might raise.

I always have pocket 8s and bet so I know from experience that this is a flush a ton of the time and the rest of the time it will be a straight, set or two pair. Maybe retardedly played AhAx. What it won't be is a hand you can beat.
