I saw an advertisement for software that lets you view your opponents hole cards. It seems to me that this would be like cheating, and might give you an unfair advantage. Do the poker sites know about this?

The only hole cards you are able to get are those that went to showdown. These "cheating" applications make you think you are getting the hole cards of your opponents while you are in the hand with them, but they are either flat out lying to you or they are showing the hands that went to showdown, which can be seen by going into the hand history anyway.

I'm sure there are some cheating software out there that requires you to install a trojan on your opponents machine. This is not only hard to do, but also a federal crime.

Attempting this outbound connection would trigger the victim's firewall program, if s/he had one. In addition, the program has to connect to a specific IP address, which would become evidence in the federal prosecution after you got caught.
