New coins with President faces
"The U.S. Mint is hoping that Martin Van Buren and Millard Fillmore can do what Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea couldn't - get Americans to use dollar coins.....The Mint is hoping the continually changing faces will entice consumers to break their traditional reluctance to use dollar coins.
"We think Americans are going to want to collect the series, and that will drive the coins through the economy," said U.S. Mint Director Edmund Moy."
Maybe it's just me, but why would collectability have anything to do with long-term UTILITY success in dollar coins? Until dollar coins have a weight and bulk that allows me to carry 20-30 of them easily, I don't see what use dollar coins are, for me.
I know they're cheaper in the long-term (are they easier to counterfeit? Then maybe not..) and if you use coins a lot, it might be slightly more convenient that multiple smaller coins, but still...
Am I just weird, or is the Mint fooling themselves again?
Will the same thing happen with the new coins as the old silver dollars- people will collect some but not use them?
