Default Libertarians, get your priorities straight and come over to the dark s

I was debating this with a Libertarian friend of mine today, on why he needs to vote democratic and not republican. Here goes:
Yes, the Democrats support things you hate, we support the "Nanny State," we support higher taxes on the rich, social engineering, redistribution of wealth, etc. etc. All that economic stuff that makes your blood boil.

But lets look at what the republicans support lately. Government that is just as big, but in a different way. The Patriot Act. Military tribunals for American citizens. An erosion of the Bill of Rights (no, not the second and tenth amendments, the much more important ones like the fourth, fifth, sixth, eigth, and first).

I ask you, libertarians, which do you fear more? A big "Nanny-State" that does some wealth redistribution and social engineering, or a state where the government is so big it can wiretap your phones without a warrant, can arrest you and hold you indefinitely without a trial, can declare you an enemy combatant and deny you counsel?

Both parties are now the parties of big government. The Big Government of the Republicans is a lot scarier than the Big Government of the Democrats. Which way are you going to vote?

Edit: At the very least, if you can't bear to vote democratic, for god's sakes vote third party, stop supporting the repubs.

If they adopt a platform supporting the civil liberties of the unborn, then I could get on board.

Vote for the libertarians--I am not going to be voting for dumb or dumber. If I do that, what does that make me then?

Voting for the lesser of two evils is why we have an evil two party system in the first place.

I'm fine with you guys voting libertarian, less votes for the repubs, I just don't get the libertarians (like my friend) who still consistently vote republican.

True, but short of armed insurrection, that two party system isn't going anywhere, so you're still better off voting for the lesser of two evils, because the greater of the two evils really is a lot more evil.

That really isn't true. Give the Dems an ounce of power and they'll be just as bad. I gave up that "lesser of two evils" mentality when I realized that there IS no lesser of those two evils.

See, people say this all the time, but its just not true. The dems had power for 40 years, and we never saw the erosion of civil liberties like we have under the repubs.
