I think it would be bad form for people to start bashing P5's in any way on this forum, just as much as it is when they bash 2+2.
To be honest, internet forum wars are pretty pathetic in general. OTOH, tournaments between internet forums are pretty awesome. |

2+2 and P5's aren't meant to be the same or competing forums. 2+2 was created by published poker authors and obviously is going to be more strategic by nature. P5's was created by 3-4 guys that are passionate about poker and wanted to create a community for online poker players.
The ranking of top 75 players isn't perfect of course, what ranking system is? People bitch and moan about the BCS every year, which includes coaches and sports writers voting however they want. If they used TLB points or ROI% or profit or whatever composite calculation, people will still complain and disagree about who should be ranked where. The other point is it's not that easy to gather all the tournament results of every tournament on every major site every day accurately, how do you account for chops on Party when they don't list the payouts after the tourney, or how do you know a person's true profit in a rebuy tourney, you don't. |

Ok I agree w/ all that. They are a different type of forum. And I like the rankings, I just think they are silly and shouldn't be taken TOO seriously.

I'm not sure I'm completely inpartial when it comes to the rankings since I am ranked fairly high (currently 18th). Personally, I could care less about where I'm ranked or even that I am ranked for myself.
That being said, I will admit that it makes it MUCH easier to point to those rankings to my 'non poker' friends and family and say 'Hey, these people think I'm the 18th best MTT player in the Universe' and that means something to them, while me babbling about +EV and final tables, and satellites just gets a blank stare. Also, recognition from your peers is always cool. If it wasn't, we wouldn't see any sweat threads here, ever. Like everything else, take it with a grain of salt. The rankings are very ambiguous and as N 82 already said are really only meant to measure the short/long terms success of people who regularly play $100+ buy in tournaments across all sites all the time. I think for the criteria they set out they do a pretty good job of tracking it. It's a lot like the college football polls though, if you're already high ranked it's tough to slip very quickly, and if you're ranked low it's tough to move up real fast. It's also very tough to break in initially, and there is a bit of a 'hype' contest among players. If I was more of a self promoter on that site I think I might be top 10, but for the most part I try and let my game do my promoting. Love em or hate em, they do mean something to a lot of people as well. I use the ranking to attract poker students, and I've been approached for various writing gigs as well as backing for live tournaments in a large part due to my ranking (not that I'm not deserving, but the ranking plays a large part). At the end of they day it's all subjective. If you're happy with your results, then nothing else really matters. -Rizen |
