Paul Anka has an album in which he does covers of Van Halen's Jump, Spandau Balets True, Billy Idol's Eyes Without a Face, and Survivor's Eye of the Tiger.

I wouldn't say his versions are better but they are certainly different.

Here is a link to that album: Paul Anka Rocks

That's like Pat Boone's "In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy":

I mean, who doesn't want to hear Pat Boone cover "Smoke on the Water", "Crazy Train", or "Enter Sandman"?

Who are DMB? Watchtower is a Dylan song covered by Hendrix...

[/ QUOTE ]

Um, Dave Mathews Band? And, they do a pretty good cover of Watchtower. I still lean towards Hendrix's though.

While not necessarily better than the original, Zappa did some covers of tunes that are incredible. Specifically his cover of Stairway to Heaven, with kickass horns subbing in for the guitar solo at the end:

Zappa's Stairway

"Everybody Knows" by Concrete Blonde, covering a Leonard Cohen tune.
They also did a killer verion of George Harrison's "Beware of Darkness".

Feck, that was awesome. LOL at the horn section's pelvic thrusting mid-way through.

Thanks for that -- very cool. Also, Zappa's cover of the Allman Brothers' 'Whipping Post" is worth seeking out...
