"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.... I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now, I see" and The Minstrel Boy (preferably the Hanz Zimmer/Joe Strummer version) "The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's steel Could not bring that proud soul under; The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again, For he tore its chords asunder; And said "No chains shall sully thee, Thou soul of love and brav'ry! Thy songs were made for the pure and free They shall never sound in slavery!" Might not count since its a poem that was put into song form, but still great. |

"Tell ya, man, I'm stuck on this lovely girl
Course, to me, she means all the world But then, she likes another guy I fall down dead, she never sees the tears I cry" Violent Femmes - Please Do Not Go ---- This song used to kill me back in college. Nowadays when I hear it, I still think back to a certain point in my life and it trips me out. |

Leonard Cohen - Chelsea Hotel
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel, you were talking so brave and so sweet, giving me head on the unmade bed, while the limousines wait in the street. Those were the reasons and that was New York, we were running for the money and the flesh. And that was called love for the workers in song probably still is for those of them left. Ah but you got away, didn't you babe, you just turned your back on the crowd, you got away, I never once heard you say, I need you, I don't need you, I need you, I don't need you and all of that jiving around. I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel you were famous, your heart was a legend. You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception. And clenching your fist for the ones like us who are oppressed by the figures of beauty, you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind, we are ugly but we have the music." And then you got away, didn't you babe... I don't mean to suggest that I loved you the best, I can't keep track of each fallen robin. I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel, that's all, I don't even think of you that often. |

I'll second Long Black Veil - probably my favorite song ever.
My Dylan contribution: You hurt the ones that I love best, And cover up the truth with lies. But one day you'll be in the ditch, Flies buzzing around your eyes. Blood on your saddle - Idiot Wind The first Bright Eyes song I ever heard was If Winter Ends. It completely freaked me out and I listened to it about 20 times in a row afterwards. It is really worth hearing, because the written lyrics don't convey the angst well enough. If Winter Ends - Bright Eyes i dreamt of a fever, one that would cure me of this cold, winter set heart. with heat to melt these frozen tears and burned with reasons as to carry on. into these twisted months i plunge without a light to follow but i swear that i would follow anything if it would just get me out of here. and so you get six months to adapt and then you get two more to leave town. in the event that you do adapt we still might not want you around. and i fell for the promise of a life with a purpose but i know that that is impossible now. and so i drink to stay warm and to kill selected memories because i just can't think anymore about that or about her tonight i give myself three days to feel better or i swear i'll drive right off a [censored] cliff because if i can't make myself feel better then how can i expect anyone else to give a [censored] and i scream for the sunlight or a car to take me anywhere just get me past this dead and eternal snow because i swear that i am dying, slowly but its happening and if the perfect spring is waiting somewhere just take me there and lie to me and say it's going to be alright its going to be alright, yeah you worry too much kid, its going to be alright. - the line "i swear that I'm dying, slowly but it's happening" is the line I kept hearing in my head |

[ QUOTE ]
Ten years ago, on a cold, dark night There was someone killed 'neath the townhall lights There were few at the scene, and they all did agree That the man who ran looked a lot like me. The judge said, Son, what is your alibi? If you were somewhere else, then you don't have to die. I spoke not a word, though it meant my life I had been in the arms of my best friend's wife. She walks these hills in a long black veil She visits my grave where the night winds wail Nobody knows, no, and nobody sees Nobody knows but me. The scaffold was high, and eternity near She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear But sometimes at night, when the cold wind moans In a long black veil, she cries over my bones. She walks these hills in a long black veil She visits my grave when the night winds wail Nobody knows, no, and nobody sees Nobody knows but me. [/ QUOTE ] The Band does this song incredibly well. |

Amazing grace is a great choice.
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun dont ever shine, I would shiver the whole night through. or All of Desolation Row or This is the end, my only friend, the end. or People tell me, its a sin To know and feel too much within I still believe she was my twin But I lost the ring She was born in spring But I was born too late Blame it on a simple twist of fate. |

Elton John-The Greatest Discovery (obviously about a child discovering his new baby brother)
It might be more profound if you have had children Peering out of tiny eyes The grubby hands that gripped the rail Wiped the window clean of frost As the morning air laid on the latch A whistle awakened someone there Next door to the nursery just down the hall A strange new sound you never heard before A strange new sound that makes boys explore Tread neat so small those little feet Amid the morning his small heart beats So much excitement yesterday That must be rewarded must be displayed Large hands lift him through the air Excited eyes contain him there The eyes of those he loves and knows But what's this extra bed just here His puzzled head tipped to one side Amazement swims in those bright green eyes Glancing down upon this thing That make strange sounds, strange sounds that sing In those silent happy seconds That surround the sound of this event A parent smile is made in moments They have made for you a friend And all you ever learned from them Until you grew much older Did not compare with when they said This is your brand new brother This is your brand new brother This is your brand new brother |

Ben Harper "Gather 'Round the Stone"
[ QUOTE ] You're too young to know that you're too young to go there's no freedom to be found lying face up in the ground ashes from an unfinished life are all that's left in a tear-drop-shaped locket hanging from his mother's chest you whip the back of freedom ‘till it bleeds an oil stream then you sail down upon it in your killing machine old men who send children off to die in vain they will hear death's constant whisper call remember my name gather 'round the stone [/ QUOTE ] |
