Song lyrics that make you shiver

So I was listening to some music the other night when a traditional Irish folk song, Brennan On The Moor, came on my iPod, and there's one verse which I absolutely love and it always sends shivers down my spine.

[ QUOTE ]
Now Brennan's wife had gone to town,
Provisions for to buy,
And when she saw her Willie,
She began to weep and cry;
He says, "Give me that tenpenny";
As soon as Willie spoke,
She handed him a blunderbuss
From underneath her cloak.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course reading it, you don't get the full impact, but if you can get your hands on an MP3 or something, preferably by the Clancy Brothers, it's absolutely incredible.

So what songs are like that for you?

there's a Kate Rusby line that goes

"Is it wrong to wish you still need me" -

one of those nice wistful lines that makes you think about three girlfriends back....no biggie, but beautiful line the way she sings it - I spent a month trying to find a low harmony part to sing along with on the CD -

-------------

as for today, I couldn't get Steve Earle's/Reckless Kelly's cover of Warren Zevon's "Reconsider Me" out of my head, so I found a site that sells indie mp3s and bought it straight out for 99 cents -

it's a pretty laid back cover, but when Steve and Reckless Kelly play/sing it, it feels like it's desperation angels -

This topic is not conducive to forum discussion really. And folk is gay.

That might be true since it's difficult to convey something like this without being able to hear the actual song.

Please stop talking.

Whiskeytown,
How about "Lonelier Than This" from Steve Earle

pretty good one - I love that album.

actually, from that album - "Over Yonder" blows me away - esp. since Steve has sat down and spent a last week with a fellow on Death Row and was a witness to the execution -

The warden said he'd mail my letter
The chaplain's waitin' by the door
Tonight we'll cross the yard together
Then they can't hurt me anymore

I am going over yonder
Where no ghost can follow me
There's another place beyond here
Where I'll be free I believe

Give my radio to Johnson
Thibodeaux can have my fan
Send my Bible home to Mama
Call her every now and then

I am going over yonder
Where no ghost can follow me
There's another place beyond here
Where I'll be free I believe

I suppose I got it comin'
I can't ever pay enough
All my rippin' and a runnin'
I hurt everyone I loved

The world'll turn around without me
The sun'll come up in the east
Shinin' down on all of them that hate me
I hope my goin' brings 'em peace
