Where do you live, op? I'd like to get in on this on your buddy's side if it goes down in the next 10 days.

45 is pretty rough, not because 9minute miles would be unreasonable for you, but because 5 miles is a pretty long distance.
The average person walks around 3mph, which means walking it would take you around 100min to complete. So, you have to be moving on average around 2.2x a typical walking speed in order to do this. Like others have said, the extra time matters a lot less than your current physical condition. If by mile 3 you're completely beat up, you're screwed no matter what. |

just get your ipod set to play "eye of the tiger" on repeat and you'll do it in well under 45 minutes

That is weird. I right now run 5 in 50 and with a little training could do 45 easily. What sort of competitive soccer does he play where he considers 5 in 45 very hard? [/ QUOTE ] Goalkeeper ldo. |

I'm going with my family to the beach for a week starting tomorrow, so I'm going to try to make this happen soon after we get back. Maybe I'll try to write a TR or something. |

So I don't understand how a super-fit soccer player would have difficulty with this? [/ QUOTE ] I guess this is where the expression "Itīs a whole different ballgame" can be taken almost literally. I have played football, as we call it on this side of the pond, for all of my life, and I also did some running, basically the same time and distance as OP is contemplating taking a bet on. Now, while I could easily do the soccer game, I had a much harder time running over a long distance. This if course due to the fact that soccer is more of an interval game with normal jogging-like movement with sprinting mixed in, which is a whole different activity for your body than just flat out running that same time in a steady tempo. LDO. Glad to help |

Like 3 or 4 of my good friends ran cross country in high school 4 years. I would put them in the average shape category for this age group, since our school had mandatory sports, but we weren't particularly rigorous. They didn't train ultra hard or "eat right", which I assume is how I'd classify you. They ran 3 miles in about 24 minutes (non track). I think if you were in the shape where you ran [n]3 miles a day (like these guys) you could manage to do 45 minutes if you were prepared with hydration and ate properly the day before etc and strained it. Otherwise, not a chance. [/ QUOTE ] If you're running 3 miles in 24 minutes every day, as training, it would be ridiculously easy to run 5 miles in 45 minutes. You would certainly not need to prepare the day before etc. to do it. |

if you had 6 weeks to train, i think it would be close. as is, i think you'd need 65 minutes to get it done. five miles in 45 minutes is a very good pace. [/ QUOTE ] 5 miles in 65 minutes is a very slow tempo. Some quick googling, link, seems to confirm that it wouldn't be very hard to walk faster than that pace. I've ran 10km, appr. 6.2 miles, in just under 47 minutes. That would put me at about 38 minutes for 5 miles. That was cross country, I'm a pretty casual runner and not very athletic. This year I've ran maybe 10 times tops, haven't trained at all for a month now, and I would take the bet in the OP really fast, as long as it was for enough money to motivate me. |

yea I think you should at least try doing a 3 mile time trial running at 9 minute mile pace or slightly under and see how you feel. Your body should be able to tell you whether or not you've got another 2 miles in you or if you are spent. Also running on a track is a good thing assuming you don't psych yourself out or anything. Its a flatter, better surface and you can pace yourself better. As others have said carbs the night before, and I always like eating some fruit and like a powerbar the mornings before races/track meets. Also make sure you stretch and do a slow warm up jog before the race, ya don't wanna get out on that track cold.
Other thoughts: Any soccer player who can't run 5 miles in 9 minutes is pretty pathetic. OOT is out of shape |

Idk why you arent running every day already if you think you'll have any shot at this. The first week of training for a runner is where i always had the most drastic improvements.
You dont want to run 5 miles for nothing? bahhaha that first run will probably save you the cost of making the bet since your gonna crash and burn like 9/11 |
