Running Prop Bet

Okay.. I wasn't really sure where to post this, but OOT seemed like the most appropriate place. My friend who also plays poker and I like to bet on various crap. The other day the topic of running comes up, and he eventually bets me that I could not run 5 miles without stopping in 45 minutes (on a regular track).

A little background: I ran cross-country my freshman year in high school. I was decent but nothing special. My best time was 20:xx (5k or 3.1 mile race). Fast forward 4 years later, and I am incredibly out of shape.

I thought I could definitely do it in 45 mins with the $$ incentive, but yesterday I was talking to my friend who used to play soccer competitively, and he said that 45 mins would have been very hard even for him back when he was playing soccer and tennis year-round.

So, do you think 45 mins is reasonable? Or should I try for more time? We havn't shook on anything yet, so nothing is set in stone.

I think you'll fail. Get some serious odds on this.

You know how with a marathon they say when you run 20 miles you're halfway done?

For out of shape people doing 5 miles, when you run 4 you're halfway done, especially when you're on the clock.

I was pushing for odds, but he didn't want to give odds. Without odds how many minutes do you think I should try to get? 50? 55?

btw if this goes down tomorrow you have zerooooooooo shot. i mean you have zero shot of doing it without stopping probably, regardless of the time limit? (unless of course its something stupid like 2 hours)

I think I could def do it without a time limit since I could just do a really slow jog. But the time limit definitely complicates things. Cramps could def be a problem.

"Incredibly out of shape" can mean a lot of different things. How overweight are you? I was a moderately crappy x-country runner like you in 9th grade, also got really out of shape with a year long poker, drinking, and inactivity binge but was never more than 15lbs overweight and still would have won this bet any day of the year.

I think you have a real chance. The no stopping rule is stupid. What if your shoelace comes untied or something? I'd get that thrown out.

Do you exercise at all right now? How long since you ran in high school? I doubt you could just head out after 10 years and average a 9 minute mile over a 5-mile course.
