Do you enjoy doing what you do for a living? As for me, I'm currently a software developer and considering quitting and going back to college for a change in career.

I place people like you in the Phoenix area.

If you like people and money, you should consider a transition to technical recruiting. Most of the best in our industry come from a technical background...if you have the personality for it it's a tremendous competitive advantage over some sales guy who couldn't spell "DBA" if you spotted him the D and the B.

Recruiting is sales without the selling; you have something everyone wants (opportunity) and it doesn't cost them anything. There are crappy recruiting firms, but if you find the right one, it's a great job to have. Although I have considered telling our office admin to deny me access to forumserver.twoplustwo.com for my own good...

I'm in the process of getting hired as a Police Officer in my hometown.

Also, still in college for another 2 years (May, 2008).

I get my income from the Army National Guard, which includes my monthly drill pay and the GI Bill while I'm in college. I'll be leaving the military in July and so the transition from that to the Police will be a nice step forward.

lp,

I am a software entrepreneur (start/advise/invest in businesses) and love it. Like others here, I am considering a career change now that bruiser is looking for a personal assistant.

I manage a Subway(yes the fast food place). I don't really like it, it was my high school job and I know the business really well. I never have applied myself at school, but I would still like to finish college and do something else because I work my ass off and get paid [censored]. I use to deal poker and that paid better, but I was driving 75 miles to work one way. Plus that wasn't really fulfilling, I mean what is it going to lead to? Anyways I guess I don't really like what I'm doing for a living but I don't know what else to do.

Deep down, do you really consider yourself a "sandwich artist"?

You should start one of those "Ask me about..." threads because I bet it would be pretty interesting.

I'm a software engineer (in the game industry) and I really love my job.

Hi, with who?

[/ QUOTE ]

I worked for microsoft for 2 years (put out NHL Rivals - ms's first and only hockey game) and enjoyed that a lot. Then I worked for a really small game house (no need to mention who) for 8 months and hated it. Now I work for Surreal, a Midway studio.

I think you hit the nail on the head about specializing. Most of the "jack of all trades" type programmers that I've known are pretty unhappy - they tend to get stuck cleaning up other people's messes and filling in the glue around other people's systems. The way to go is to find what you like doing the best and get really good at it (for me it's graphics). Programming is a lot more rewarding when you are involved in the design process, can work directly with your customers (usually internal customers), and can see a piece of a project through from start to finish.

I work in the Gaming industry in Australia. I am the Assistant GM of a gaming/hospitality venue.

We run: slots (including some interactive Roulette and BJ) multiple bar and food outlets, fitness centre, function/conference facilities and have around 320 employees. I love it and it pays very well. I can't think of anything else I would wan't to do.

I also own an industry based consultancy business, as well as teach a few courses for an RTO.

Dropped out of college at 22, went back at 25. Now graduating at 27 in industrial engineering. Already got a kickass job waiting for me in August.

As for the job: I designed and built a machine for a company that fills spraycans as a graduation project (or whatever you call it in the states). General manager was so impressed with it that he hired me to install three production lines in a new plant they're building right now.

It's a very small company, that's only existed for three years, but right now, they're expanding big time. I will be the first higher profile they hire. So far it's only the two owners, a secretary and a whole bunch of temp workers. The job they hired me for has some mad responsibility in comparison to what I'm typically offered as a starting job. I see lots of possibilities.
